It seems like prebuilt PCs from places like PC World focus on having lots of RAM because it sounds good to the layman looking to buy a new computer. But when is it actually useful to have tons of memory (ie 16gb+)

If your in situations where you really will use it. Many Photoshop users may get through that easy.

I used 16GB with my i7 2600 back a year ago , worked well no issues. Just always had 12.something GB free all the time. :p So when i upgraded i just got 8GB of faster speed ram.

For most users/gamers 8GB is more than enough atm.:D

For gaming the benefits of 16gb are so tiny you wouldnt even notice it. In bf4 for example on max settings on the spec in sig, my max ram use is around 5gb.

I posted this in another thread a few days ago and I think it explain the problem quite well:

I agree with above. :)

RAM has two elements which effect system usage, size and speed.
Size is basically; How much data it can process in one 'unit' of time.
Speed is; How fast it processes this data.

So really the only way MORE RAM helps is if you're consistently using more (the full amount) of RAM you currently have. 8GB is more than enough for your uses.
