Hey, i am currently using 1x1gb of kingston hyperx ram (ddr2), windows 7 with various editing software/games. Has been running fine up until now. Think its time i have a mini upgrade (towards xmas/new years anyway).

Now is it worth me picking up a ddr 4gb hyperx kit for around £55 or should i maybe spend a abit more and get a ddr 3 board and fill it with ram (as the ddr3 ram prices are quite low at the moment).

What do you lot think? if the latter recommendations of board etc? i have a cheap but new sound card (Asus Xonar DG 5.1 PCI Sound Card) and my processor is an Intel Q6600 (i am quite happy with this).

Thanks.

Current specs

Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply
Kingston HyperX 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-9200C5 1150MHz
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz
Asus P5Q-E Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)

used for abit of everything, struggles a little with games at the moment (seems to crash or loose video randomly nowadays).

I'm in a very similar situation as it happens to you at the moment, Intel [email protected], 4GB DDR2 RAM, ATI Radeon 5770 1 GB GDDR5 which is currently being used for gaming and various forms of media. I too have been pondering the same as you but feel it's worth the extra money for new technology as in the long run it will be a lot more beneficial along with it being easier to upgrade certain components without having to upgrade the majority of my system (even though that's effectively what I have to do now).

Since I'm designing a home server/media system my new spec is going to be moderate for the average gamer that isn't going to be stressing the system to the max like some people will.

Personally I'm going for an i5 2500k build with a Z68 MOBO chipset; specs will be:

i5 2500k
Asus P8Z68-V LX Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel

I would list the rest but it looks like your current components are sufficient for what you use them for.

Only downside to what I've mentioned however is that you're looking at a larger hole in your pocket than if you were just to upgrade your memory, in the long run though I think it'll be worth it. Hope this helps in some way

If your CPU is up to your current needs, a good P45 or X48 DDR3 board and an 8GB kit of DDR3 memory is just what the doctor ordered. DDR3 is dirt cheap right now and much less expensive and easier to find than DDR2.

Which board do you think? I am quite happy with my cpu

The p5q-e is a good board. Apart from the lack of DDR3 support there's no reason to replace it.

Without even looking hard you can get 4GB (2 x 2GB) of brand new Crucial DDR2 to suit it for under £40.

Add that to the OP’s existing 2 x 1GB and I would have thought it would suffice.
