More sleep = More tired?

Why is it that the more sleep I get the more tired I feel in the morning?

I've just recently started work and I'm getting up at 5am each morning of the week. The night before my first day I had a lot on my mind and so I literally only got about 15 mins sleep. Surprisingly, I felt okay. Next night I only got 3 hours, but again I felt absolutely fine in the morning. Last night I got a healthy 7 hours though and felt absolutely terrible this morning. I was really tired and just wanted to stay in bed.

You might say that this morning could have been the last two days catching up with me but I've always found that the more sleep I get the more tired and less able to get out of bed I am in the morning.

I find when that happens to me, it is because of the no sleep catching up on me. For instance after lots of sleep on the weekend, I find that I don't need as much on Monday night, as I do on Tuesday night etc...

You also need to be consistent with the amount of sleep you get, otherwise you confuse your body and have a weird body clock.

Lots of sleep is, contrary to what you may think, bad for you past a certain point.
For me it's any more than 8 hours, varies from person to person I guess. I feel groggy, headache, can't get out of bed etc.
Not having a regular sleep pattern doesn't help either.

I try and go to bed at the same time everynight, normally 12ish and up at 6.

Never fell tired after my shower, just a case of your body getting used to it.

Go to bed at the same time every night. Wake up at the same time every morning. Don't do anything other than sleep in bed [and get pastry crumbs everywhere ;)] and leave your curtains open!

You get your body in a rhythm when it comes to sleeping - you will feel tired around the normal bed time. You will wake up naturally around the same time each morning - in the summer the light from outside also does a great deal to help. Much nicer way of waking up than an alarm blaring away 6 inches from your face. :p

When you sleep for varying amounts of time your body can't readjust itself, so you will feel groggy, even after a lot of sleep.

Most days I beat my alarm, and it is such a lovely feeling to have those "extra" 5 minutes to doze before it does go off! :D Though when it does you should jump straight out of bed. Don't dawdle!

Sleep deprivation is accumulative. You haven't had any where near enough sleep, so your body is in deficit. Once you've caught up, you'll feel better.

perhaps as you're getting so few hours your body isn't shutting down, but when you get 7 or so hours it gets a chance to go into deep deep sleep mode, so when you awake it's harder as you were so much deeper in sleep
