Hey guys.

Today windows reports a "detected issue" with d: and notification says to "restart to repair drive errors". However every time I do this, it stops at 67% (even after 10-15min).

I can get back into windows if I skip the scan...
-If I run the "error checking" from windows it stops at about 35% and system becomes... Weird; Not completely unresponsive but clicking 'cancel' does nothing, 'start>shutdown' takes 5mins to take effect etc.

I can't really format it, because I can't back it up.
And I'm in China so doubt they'll send a replacement... What can I do?

Windows seems to run ok but has the following;

Symptoms...
-After startup, my computer shows d: but it takes a while before it's accessible (it has load)
-Opening a folder often creates a 5-10 second wait or loading bar
-Movies that were working yesterday stop/skip
-*sometimes* can't copy files to the c: from d:

Specs;
Windows 10, 64bit
173gb free of 900gb
Kingston SUV500960g

More thoughts...
-Not sure if it's a coincidence but last night I modded my gtx1080 with an AIO... Didn't touch SSD.
-I did notice a few weeks back a LOT of my music has jumping/skipping, at the same point in the track, no matter which program is used to open it, indicating the data is corrupt maybe???

I have NO idea how people can say SSDs are more reliable than HDDs... This £160 drive was bought less than a year ago to replace only a 3 year old Crucial which stopped living.
Meanwhile I have a Samsung F3 HDD which is still going after 11+ years... Never missed a beat.

Test it with HD Tune. Do the full error scan (not quick). And see if that fails.
Thanks, have been looking for some software to scan it... It's deffo a bad drive... About a third of my pics are corrupt and most of my films are scrambled.

Kingston have said they'll replace but don't know if they'll send one to China yet but I bought it in the UK. .. Didn't even suggest any way of trying to fix it though

Yeah looks like it. It is possible for the data to be corrupt without the drive beign faulty, but it's far more likely to be the drive.

If the drive is faulty it's a case of getting off everything you can ASAP, there's not much you can do to fix a SSD if it's failling.

They may send it to china, they are made in the region. :D

Well i explained to them what happened and they said straight away theyd send a replacement... Almost as if these drives are known to fail... Will go more carefull in future. Usually back up once a month but now with my SSD trust level that's gonna be once a month. I'm looking at buying a regular hdd now... God damn they're chunky though. Only thing that puts me off.

haha yeah everything is made here. God damn though sometimes it's VERY hard to get something here even if its made here. I'm trying to get a mini to normal size 4pin pwm fan port... £4 on Amazon Uk, £38 on TaoBao here... Cannot find it at a normal price ANYWHERE.

Yeah I'm gonna try rip everything off now... Thing is I really can't be arsed to check each individual file to see if it's corrupted... Arg.

For anyone that's interested and sees this post... Pic of what my corrupt images look like (one of) and error logging below...

** I WOULD URGE ANYONE WITH AN SSD TO BACKUP FREQUENTLY, ESPECIALLY BEFORE DOING A WINDOWS REPAIR ATTEMPT**

SYMPTOMS...
-Had d: "error detected, restart to fix"
-After, had a "file system error" when opening (now stopped)
(loaded pic, loading cursor 1min, then got file system error)

Now...
-Almost all videos artifacting/skipping/stoping (Youtube vids normal)
-Weird artifacting on lots of pictures...
>Pic has a normal thumbnail, but after copying to c:, artifacting is on new thumbnail
>Same when opening with a different app (eg paint)
>Sometimes pic loads ok, THEN the weird block of artifacting appears
>Sometimes, I open a pic, can see the artifacting banding, 1 second later, the artifacted area changes to a different colour/banding
>Sometimes images don't appear to fully open, out of focus, like when you look at a piture on google image search, it's out of focus, then the detail 'pops' in.

-Open folder (eg wallpapers), nothing, then not responding, then loading 10secs, then open
-hw monitor loads a blank screen, reports not responding, then opens
-D: Word docs, folders, everything almost always very slow to open

Yeah well i noticed a few weeks ago some of my tracks in itunes kept skipping... Thought it was just a few but then it kept happening. Checked the music file in another app, the track jumped and skipped at exactly the same time, indicating a corrupted track.

Now i've checked the orignal files I used to copy to it when ssd was new... And tracks are fine, so now I know why the'ye been skipping... Should have investigated last week. I thought it was strange so many different tracks were bad.

So... I had plenty of warning really. Will know for next time.

Try a different SATA port? Unlikely to work, but worth a try.

But I think it done in to be fair.
Yeah I tried a different sata port, ran the sata power off a different chain, and used a different sata cable... Same issue.

I've got everything off it now, give or take a few movies, as I luckily had all pics backed up. And all the wordpad docs survived.

Do bad sectors on an ssd spread... Like a virus?
I wonder if once I'm finished, if I format the drive, it will like quarantine or 'write off' those sectors and never write to them again, and then the rest of the drive will be OK... Hope so... 140 quid drive.

I'm not sure if SSD's work like hdds in that regard...
