More SSD questions

Hey everyone.

I have my first SSD coming tomorrow, the Intel X25-M 80GB. What is the latest version of the firmware and where can I get it? I read that I should use AHCI how do I go about doing this? Basically I am a noob with a SSD, help!

AHCI is set in the bios, you can check the firmware version with the intel ssd toolkit

Most recent fw is 02HD, available (along with the SSD Toolbox) here.

Thanks for the link. I have two SATA controllers on my motherboard a Gigabyte and one called an ICH10R, does it matter which one I use?

Use the ICH10R as its the intel ones, and are a lot better.

Ok, it doesnt like me using AHCI mode. Wont let me boot when I enable it, im using the Gigabyte UD5 is it a common problem?

Are you trying to boot a pre installed OS? If so you will need to edit the registry to enable ACHI for that Windows installation.

This was the problem, I didn't reaise I had to edit the registry. Done now though; I did say I was a complete noob

What made you chose the Intel over the new OCZ Vertex 2E @ £154.99 at OCUK on this week only?

It wasn't on offer at the time and I've heard the Intels have and will age well, don't know about OCZ.
