About to start Uni doing Architecture (so lots of autocad use etc).
I recieved some paperwork the other day detailing what my PC spec should be.
They recommend 2GB Or More of Ram, do I need this? It seems quite a lot? Especially as to fit more than 2GB i would have to replace my curent 1GB(2x512) with sticks at 1GB each which would be fairly expensive?

Personally, I would give it a few weeks into the semester, run AutoCad with some typical designs/projects you'll be dealing with and see what the memory usage is like. Check out what their labs PCs are like, how well they run and how much memory they have.

In this situation, there's no point in throwing money at something until you've seen for yourself there's a problem :)

Excellent advice, don't go nuts buying loads of RAM until you know you need it.

Thanks guys that sounds like a good idea. I was wondering as I dont have much trouble running autocad at the moment although it would obviously benefit from more ram but if I dont need it i wont buy it.

They suggest an A3 printer too!

I use Autocad for my work every day & have never needed more than 1g of ram, maby if you are doing a lot of 3d/rendering work then you would benifit from more.

As for an A3 printer, i use a HP Deskjet 9800 which is great, it does my drawings, letters, photo's, etc., (i use a Designjet 430 for my larger drawings)

Sorry OT but wo, your gona use AutoCAD? We haven't even touched that and I'm going into the 3rd year of Architecture in September. I think they want us to learn it then but probably won't give us formal training on it. When I started the course they didn't mention anything about computers. Just gave a long list of stationary we would need though I bought my laptop so I can run some design apps aswell. Mainly ArchiCAD which the uni provides rather cheaply to us.
