Mortgage Rate Rises

I've not been.

I love the outdoors.
I like places with not many people.
I like it's our of the way.
I like how wild it is away from the cities.
The relatively Clean oceans.

But I've never been.

Fair enough.

It's a great place if you have money (like most places I suppose). I've moved back to the South Island to a little place just outside Christchurch. Probably one of the best places to live in NZ in my opinion. Which I suppose makes it a contender for one of the best places to live in the world.

But you need money. It's a miserable place if you're struggling.

My parents have a little hobby farm just outside Chch in West Melton, seems an idyllic little place if you like the quiet life.

We're in Lincoln. Which is 10min from West Melton.
Small world, my Dad works at Landcare in Lincoln and Mum used to work for the University of Lincoln so have spent a fair amount of time there. Used to be a half decent bar called The Rock I think but Google tells me it's probably closed now. My wife still raves about an Indian restaurant called Corianders in Rolleston. Probably be back over next year if I can cope with 28 hours on a plane with a 3 year old.

So I've heard.

I think its a pipe dream though. I don't think my career is in demand there. But it's nice to dream!

Its got all the things I like about Wales.. But just amplified.

We're actually looking at coming back to the UK in a few years' time. Although we're being warned off that by so many people.

I'd do a lot of things to get out of here. I regret not when I was younger. Its quite frustrating but mainly myself to blame

I would always want to get to know a place enough that I know both the up and downsides. The grass is greener on the other side will always skew perceptions. Once you know why people don’t like living in NZ then then you could make a choice without regret. I know too many that make the move as some kind of escapism type thing to really regret it later.

Definitely don't underestimate how far away NZ is either, getting back to the UK is a long and expensive undertaking!

I've moved abroad twice without ever visiting the city I was moving to, and it worked out great, no regrets at all. It depends hugely on your character, do you enjoy new experiences and different cultures? No problem. Are you the sort of person that complains on holiday that the bacon isn't as good as back home? Yeah, you probably shouldn't emigrate.

You mean like the people who go on holiday and the first thing they look out for is where to get a full English breakfast and get annoyed if they can't get one? .

Or spend most of their holiday in some crappy ex-pat bar where all the seats face the telly so they can watch the football

I get asked a lot about living in SK by people wanting to move there and I just say visit enough times and get to know some people living there to give you an honest opinion. See the bad side of the country before you make a permanent move. Then weigh it against all the good stuff. If they are young then it’s less of an issue, just go there teach English or whatever and have fun.

We see the bad side of the UK because of living there, outside it also looks like this wonderful place to live.
