Mortgage Rate Rises

Possible I guess. The UK economy is struggling, budget looks to be anything but growth oriented and inflation is pretty low although some parts are still sticky.

Or maybe they've been buying loads of gilts and want to see a quick profit :D

Goldman's coming out with some questionable predictions recently

I'd agree it's gonna come down.
I don't think wages are going to grow much.
Demand seems to be winding down.
Productivity is going no where but flat at best.

Now food, that's the sticky one imo.
More adverse (global) weather we have the more pressure on food. I mean it's the last thing you cut back on. You can turn your heating off.. But you can't stop eating.

But because inflation is calced how it is, even if food spikes where others decline the headline rate will come down and rates will be cut.

But yeah.. I see an aggressive decline myself.
Put it this way.
Id be more surprised to see rates in 2027 rounding to 3pc than rounding to 2pc.

Yea it's ******** isn't it.

Your brand new Maserati is only going for £300k instead of £400k, and imported caviar is at rock bottom, so inflation is low.

But a tin of corned beef is still £3.50.

Its the cost I've noticed most.
Other stuff like eating out has probably gone up even more but at least I can just not do that.
And any trade work... Ridiculous!

Heating, food and rent are awful. What is it the poorer spend a disproportionate amount on? Oh yeah. Food, housing and utilities.

A cauliflower is still £1.19 and can be grilled or fried with various spices, sprinkled with cheese and grilled or just form the main ingredient for a curry dish. It makes a good accompaniment to sausage with a cheese sauce if you want to add meat.

Although you are correct, albeit starting to sound a little like 50p Lee, society shouldn't be moving backwards to 1950s meals as a standard especially when it's caused by feckless government(s) who don't have to follow what they have caused themselves.

I'm not saying it should be caviar and steaks but it shouldn't be beans and toast every night either. A diet should be balanced if you want the population to be healthy which has the added effect of taking strain off the NHS.

Glad we locked in a couple of weeks ago. One final check on prices end of last week and they had gone back up a fair chunk. Hopefully it now falls decently for when our 2 year is up. It’s not surprising that the economy is flatlining or that interest rates have been too high, more and more people locking in at these prices and I can’t imagine many having much money leftover.

I am reactionary against people's lessening abilities to put cheap nourishing tasty meals on the table instead of a variety of expensive takeaway delivery systems working the gig economy and terrible for the environment.

However it is not this threads topic.

This is the big one (and actually quite a large problem for the entire economy). Getting anything done on your house is hilariously expensive now because tradesman just won't get out of bed for a reasonable amount. They seem to want excessive money in my opinion.

A relative gets £200 a day for sticking emulsion on walls working for someone they know who owns a decorating business in a poor /low house price part of the country. They had no experience painting whatsoever. That's just what they get paid too, so god knows what the mark up/profit the business owner is making too.

If you want your entire house done up, it's probably cheaper to take a year off work and do it yourself. You'd probably end up quids in.

...now imagine how much contractors charge (well, fleece..) the government for infrastructure/construction work...

The amount tradesmen expect is getting rather silly, especially when (from my experience), most are not very good at what they do anyway.

I'm in no way disparaging skilled tradesmen here. But I think it's a sign of a sick economy when any construction work becomes prohibitively expensive, even for fairly well paid people.

Someone stopped by while I was battling with my hedge. They offered a quote.. I waved them on.

To remove the oak tree branch in my garden that fell down. I bought a chain saw as the quote to remove it was 2x the price of the saw.

Even getting gutters done was not cheap.

We are at the point that if it's not essential it doesn't get done!

Problem is I guess if they are busy they can charge what they like.

People aren't eating like **** in this country because they can't afford not to, its because they are lazy and don't want to. There is a reason there is a higher concentration of **** fast food places in poorer areas and there is a reason a lot of poorer people are obese.

Yes food costs a lot but it doesn't cost anything like as much as getting a mcdonalds or KFC or any other takeaway. In a cost of living crisis, the likes of deliveroo are making an absolute killing. People are paying 40% extra to get their KFC delivered despite the fact its rarely more than 5 minutes drive away from them. People are lazy.

This idea that eating cheaply is a bad thing needs to stop. You can eat healthily and nutritiously and stick to a budget. It just requires people to get off their asses, put some effort in and cut into their vital 4 hours a night in front of the TV.

It has indeed gone a bit 30p Lee. I won't mention the member, but last time we had this angle the end point was peasants using scrap wood to cook communal gruel on urban green spaces.

As Hagar would no doubt say himself, you just can't make generalisations like that, you have no idea as to it's veracity.

Honestly man, it's unreal.

I stopped at the services on a long drive to grab a McDonalds and to take a rest, I must have been queueing for about 20 mins - because there were so many deliveroo/just-eat drivers picking up orders from the services, that I could barely get served

I actually couldn't believe, that there are people sat at home - getting food ordered from the motorway services, it blew my mind lol.

I have plenty of sympathy for people struggling financially but when we are a nation of fatties and people try and sell the line that "its cheaper to feed my family at the chippy than cook at home" it all evaporates because you are just talking crap. You would rather make your family suffer than take the tiny amount of effort to cook healthily at home.

Kind of off topic, but it’s so true. I’ve given up with our local McDonalds, it’s now pretty pricey for what is offered and I’ll get served quicker with a sit down meal in any other restaurant. Calorie per pound, junk food in supermarkets is far far cheaper than fruit and veg though, it doesn’t help matters. The bigger problem is that cost of living has just generally left less ‘fun’ money in the pot, it’s a big contributing factor to the many angry people out and about. We don’t have kids, so the impact is low, but it must be hitting families hard.
