Well, I guess it depends on how defines an RPG.
D2 has quests, levelling, skills, items, NPC interaction, 'towns', dungeons, multiple distinct character classes etc.
In fact it ticks most of the criteria for an RPG, it's just the realtime combat system that maybe casts doubts in people's minds. I'd say it's more an RPG than some games mentioned like Deus Ex.
Personally I'd say the most enjoyable PC RPG is KOTOR, but my experience is quite limited. My sister was a big fan of the Baldurs Gate / Icewind Dale games so I'll probably try them one day.
I've just started Fallout 3 and it seems OK so far, certainly more accessible than Oblivion.
I wasn't overly keen on the ToB expansion, mainly due the fact that level 18+ in D&D terms is just god-like. Bear in mind that Drizzt is only level 16, Lich's are usually 12+.
At these levels, casters just become totally dominant - Time Stop is just unreal, and classes like Fighters cease to be any real use...
Oblivion for me.
When well modded and played on a big monitor it's easy to loose yourself for hours. I've spent many hours on it and consequently find I get scenic landscapes and panoramas pop into my dreams!
Can't really call STALKER a true RPG but I loved the grimy feel to that game when you were trying to survive.
Despite loving Oblivion I found Fallout 3 the polar opposite. Felt like I was just going through the motions. Cannot get into it and have dropped it.
