What is the single most expensive part you have ever repaced on a car other than the engine or gearbox?

Not talking about modding just those parts that have failed and have cost you an arm and a leg to replace?

What car was it on?

I think mine was a fuel tank on my Alfa 75 3.0V6. Cost me about £400 from the stealer.

Rear axel on the GTi probably, needed a whole selection of other parts to go with it including calipers/hubs/ABS sensors/brake cables etc. Cant remember the final figure but the 2 sensors and hubs were around £200, the calipers were about £60each and I get stuff at cost price from work.

New ECU was quoted by main dealer for my old 306 at £1,100 inc fitting. I didn't get it done and traded it in for £1,100 against my current Focus.

Cylinder head on my old A3 (I know you said excluding engine but it's not the whole engine :p). God knows how much it would have cost - was done under warranty.

Oh yeah, the Turbo failed on the Mk5 Golf I had at 8months old/10k miles. That was about £1,500 of work done under warranty though.

Ignoring the OP.

New gearbox = £750 on a MK4 Golf

It failed within a week and I had another one put in...
