Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, sub 1k mx5's are cheap for a reason, they have starship amount of miles and the roof is shot, that roof looks very old to me.

Not a chance on earth i would buy a mx5 for the road for 1k, other cars offer much better value for money.

To change the roof btw your looking at 290 - 500 fitted.
Didnt think of the roof tbh, I knew starship miles would be the case, but they can take that, but yea, forgot about the roof condition.

Well, i'm off to see an e30: 1987 325i se 4 door on 140k with fsh (in the next few days) and from the pics/description it sounds fairly mint. I'll have to change the wheels as they're a bit carp. Either way gonna have a looksee.

I'm just a bit concerned because a few people have been telling me horror stories about being total money pits. I had 2 e36 bmws (318i and 318is) and neither was a problem, but then they were both a lot newer.

ARRRGH E30 or Rover coupe?, I know the E30 will be more fun to drive, the Coupe will be a faster car, but I'm torn between which is likely to cost me more to run, being as the point of this exercise it to aid my saving for a newer car. Lost..

i know of a 99T 620 Ti for sale with 77k,blue, 12 months mot, gearbox rebuilt with steel caged main bearings & new clutch, mongoose exhaust, lowered, cat 1 for around your kind of budget. let me know if you want more details!

As said above this is rover turbo money, were my thoughts before entering. I'd have a 620Ti or perhaps look into converting a mk3 200.

I wonder who's that might be then ;)

Another vote for an S13, I'm slightly biased though :) Should be able to pick one up for a grand if you look around and haggle, rust shouldn't be a problem if you stick to K/L/M reg cars, they got facelifted and had bigger front brakes and an LSD as standard for those years. J plates were a changeover year so some cars won't have all of the facelift extras.

A few cheap mods like exhaust, filter, volvo/saab FMIC and you should see 240bhp and 0-60 of under 6 seconds if you're any good at launches :)
