Most 'generic' fps?

By my own admission, I personally think that I suck playing fps games. When I played cod2 on my 360 online I was pretty good, not one of the best, but frequently finishing games as one of the better players. I haven't really played online much in the last couple of years, and have now moved onto pc.

I do occassionally play TF2 online, but I get raped hard. Usually I'm strictly average. I used to frequently finish as one of the lowest scorers, but over the last few months I've found myself actually fnishing somewhere in the middle :D Maybe I don't play it often enough? There's loads of people who seem to have a whole load of upgrades etc, maybe they just spend more time playing than me?

What is the most generic fps game, one that I could play that would help improve my general fps skills? CS:Source?

Also: I've been playing Bad Company 2 single player for a while now. Considering how long it's been out, is it actually worth playing it online now? Or would everyone just be miles ahead of me?

Thanks lads

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have a look at the games mentioned.

As I said, I was good at Cod2 on 360, but that's no achievement :p And I'm average at TF2. I'm just afraid of playing BF BC2 online and getting raped without lube.

To someone new to pc gaming CSS may be a bit brutal, the game though back in its day had beautiful balance and probably still has. IT may work for you but it would be jumping in the deep end to see if you sink or swim.

Hi, I'm not really that new to fps to be honest. Been playing them for a long while, just never taken the opportunity to 'hone my skills' as it were. I played some CS:Source a while back, not much but just a little bit.

Thanks for your advice all, I'm taking it all on board.

Hi guys. update on the thread. I've been playing quake live and I've gotten pretty good. But one thing- I die too much. I just played a game and won it (wooo) but as well as having the most kills, I also had the most deaths :(

Anyway that I can solve this problem?

I'd agree with Quake Live, certainly fits the bill as a generic FPS since it is:

-Primarily deathmatch focused
-Traditional FPS design, i.e. respawns, items to collect etc rather than worrying about special gametypes, classes, buying weapons, unlocks etc etc
-"solid" physics model that is neither realistic nor as extreme as the likes of Quakeworld
-Reasonably n00b friendly in the sense that it has training modes, runs in a browser, doesn't need high end hardware

A key point to note is that "generic" doesn't necessarily mean "easy" or "popular".

See above mate. I've been playing quake live for a while, and I have to agree with you, it's great! I'm winning games from time to time now, but I need a way to die less :p

My last few games have been exactly the same:

1. Die about 10 times before I get my first kill
2. Struggle to kill
3. Get my eye in and play really well
4. Finish in the top 3

That's pretty much how every game goes for me :P
