Most 'generic' fps?

I'd agree with Quake Live, certainly fits the bill as a generic FPS since it is:

-Primarily deathmatch focused
-Traditional FPS design, i.e. respawns, items to collect etc rather than worrying about special gametypes, classes, buying weapons, unlocks etc etc
-"solid" physics model that is neither realistic nor as extreme as the likes of Quakeworld
-Reasonably n00b friendly in the sense that it has training modes, runs in a browser, doesn't need high end hardware
-Isn't as heavily focused on item management as some, you can be effective with more than just a couple of weapons

A key point to note is that "generic" doesn't necessarily mean "easy" or "popular".

See above mate. I've been playing quake live for a while, and I have to agree with you, it's great! I'm winning games from time to time now, but I need a way to die less :p

CS:S Deathmatch Servers. Unreal (like mentioned above) - Anything fast paced online.

But CS:S on Deathmatch is what I use to get used to hardware/peripheral changes when playing fps'. It's quick paced but requires the right amount of slow down skill.. eg. you won't be running around spraying and getting kills (if you're playing a good widespread map)

Definitely CS:Source Deathmatch servers

I always get higher kill : death ratio in death match than in normal team matches.

Sometimes getting like 200 kills for 120 deaths

When I played Bfbc2 for the first time, it felt so sluggish ;)

Ah hadn't realised it was an old thread.
My advice in terms of avoiding deaths is

1) Don't worry about it too much if you're having fun. As I mentioned QL has a lot of decent 'mid-tier' weapons so it is very hard for an average player to avoid dying, even if you control key areas and items someone will always be able to grab say a shotgun from somewhere and do some damage
2) Sounds obvious but you should start building up a picture in your head of when the important items are spawning (in particular armours and powerups) and make sure you are in contention for them every time
3) Think about how you position yourself in the environment relative to what weapons you and/or your opponents have. For example, against somebody with a railgun, try not to enter big open spaces but if you must, move in an unpredictable fashion. If you've got say a rocket launcher you'll be much better off in an area with plenty of walls to hit for slash damage, in particular you'll want height advantage. Trying to shoot a guy above you can be extremely tough because you can't aim at their feet, in that situation you may be better off switching to a hitscan weapon and/or retreating into a position where you can take advance of the rocket splash.
4) Spectate good players and watch how they handle different situations, what are they doing that makes them stay alive longer

My last few games have been exactly the same:

1. Die about 10 times before I get my first kill
2. Struggle to kill
3. Get my eye in and play really well
4. Finish in the top 3

That's pretty much how every game goes for me :P

a lot of the oldschool twitch style shooters are better if you want to learn fps proper but....

depending on experience and age :p would depend on what to try.

Also: I've been playing Bad Company 2 single player for a while now. Considering how long it's been out, is it actually worth playing it online now? Or would everyone just be miles ahead of me?

I've only just installed this as well. Jumped straight into the online, and I'm having fun with it. You level up reasonably quick, and while some of the higher level players will have some perks you don't, the guns all have their own strengths and weaknesses. There aren't as many 'uber leet' players as you might expect; I've mostly been playing people in the 20s and under, with only a few 30+ players here and there.

The only thing I would say is don't play it like CoD; running in and thinking you can win a game single-handedly will get you killed. A lot.

Other than that, it's a great game. I wouldn't hesitate to try it if you already have the game :)
