My picks

Microsoft Xbox 360:
Gears of War (cover system)

Sony Playstation 3:
Little Big Planet (user generated content)

Nintendo Wii:
Wii Sports (for all the wrong reasons)

Multi-Platform:
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Perks)

360 - Gears of War (First 'big' easily accessable FPS on a console, although more testiment to Live being so easy to use on the 360 then the game itself possibly)

Its not an FPS and Goldeneye was the first FPS on a console to work right. Halo then redefined how FPS games should work on a console.

I really hate the Gears of War cover system as every game now feels as if it needs some variation of it to be good. >_____<

It influenced a bunch of games this gen. I now can't play any third person shooter game without some sort of cover system.

Actually, I want to use a cover system in every FPS game too now after playing Killzone 2.

LBP cants be that good, nobody plays its anymore and not many games on the horizon which use its features.

Plenty of people are still playing it. Maybe not COD4 numbers but its still active.

LBP brought forward what can be done with user generated content. I would have also said spore but thats on the pc.

Like it or not, only the wii has done anything genuinely new this generation. Everything else is evolutionary, which is great, but it's the same.

All the Wii has done is add a different method of controlling games. Most of the waggle controls can be a simple button press.

I
Saints Row 2 for it's general playability, it made sandbox games again fun
mass Effect for it's character interaction.
Darkness for it's uniqueness in it's story and character.
Battlefield Bad Company for it's destroyable scenary (came before Red Faction 2, though it does it very well also).

GTA1 was fun and was sandbox game.
kotor? or any rpg really.
Darkness? Oh that game.
Red Faction 1 had destructible environments on the ps2.

I'd say Portal has the potential to be influential but as of yet we haven't seen anything similar to it. It's the only game I can think of that has a first person setup but does not allow you the use of any weapons. I've certainly never played anything like it before so it can't be classed as an evolution of an earlier game, unless such a game existed years ago?

Because its not a fps. You're just a test subject testing out a new piece of equipment.

Anyone that mentions COD 4 should take themselves outside and martydom themselves. It maybe a fantastic game to play online but neither the single player or the multiplayer brought anything new to the genre or generation.

The perk system was robbed from Star Wars battlefront which I'd still rather play if they made one for this gen. COD 4 in a star wars skin ;)

Influential doesn't mean originality. Ever since COD4 came out, other games have had some sort of perk system. Perks is the new coined phrase for weapon upgrades and features in an fps game.
