Behind you... Naked!
My lads just built himself a sweet little PC and its his first build. He is unfortunataly devastated at its poor performance

Hell, I keep waffling - Trust me, this has been editted many times.

Ok, the Motherboard is an MSI B450 Gaming MAX.

Not the best by a long way, but it says that it works with all GEN 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 CPUs.
But does it?

I want to buy him a great CPU but again, I dont want to spend sily money on it as I cannot afford to.

He can then concentrate on buying himself a decent GPU ( Unless the APU Capabilities are seriously good enough? )

Anyone suggest any CPUs that are worth going for?

You could look in to getting a 5800X3D.
No APU though, so you will need a dedicated GPU.
Ok I will have a looksie.
I think he should be fine as I wil lgive him a half decent card to play with while he saves for a good one.
Dude, with your Sig,and your post count, I'm wondering why you are even asking. No offence.
None Taken. I used to be fairly knowledgable, but some time ago I had an accident and my head is not what it used to be. I am often scatterbrained and so at 1pm I might do something like write a tune, or write a small routine on a program I may be working on, I then go and have a cuppa or a piddle, and I will get back and my head is simply gone to the dogs.
I had to learn to walk and speak and do many things but lots is just nuts. I have a serious issue where I have a mixed memopry of things that happen and I can take months for my head to organise what is going on, yet my childhood I can remember like a movie in intricate details that utterly astound my parents, even to the point that I know every numberplate of every car and motorbike that my parents owned, I know exactly where we went in each car and even conversartions that my parents had when in teh car, not only that, but I can name and in many cases date everyoen who came to the house and for what reason... Now thats mental. But try to remember what I had for breakfast today... Ok, its chilli cheese on toast but thats only cos Im not finished LOL
As for the specs... I bought the best I could afford at the time, and I wanted Intel and AMD so these were bought roughly the same time.
You don't state what the current cpu or ram is, what exactly is he unhappy about if he doesn't yet have a gpu? Please list his full current specs.
Oh sorry...
Mobo is an MSI B450 Gamer
CPU is a Ryzen 5 2400G and its 3.6Ghz
RAM is Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB

Obviously, the RAM could be more, but on my main PC I am using a 16GB RAMDISK and so I am only left with 16GB to play with and it does not affect the speed in playing anything I want to.

The CPU Speed should I would have thought, be good, but he is also saying that its not just the games, but converting videos and stuff is also slow... Again, I am not there as he lives in his flat in another town.

2400g isn't great. But should be fine with something older and low end. Thinking rx580 level and below. But with latest bios that board supports the 5000 series so 5700x3d should be a beast. If you're looking to save some money a 5600 or 5700x would also be perfectly serviceable gaming cpus so long as you're not trying to squeeze every last frame out of the highest end gpus.

Hmm? Ok, I have certainly had a few people suggest this CPU, so I wil lhave a good think and let you know what I have decided... Thanks guys.

The 2400G is an old CPU and low end when it was new.

I agree with the rest of the thread, a Ryzen 5700X3D is a good choice, the X3D part nominates 3D Stacked cache, its specifically good for gaming with a discrete GPU but it will do anything well, any Ryzen 5000 series is going to be much better.

Ignore the base clock number, like 3Ghz vs 3.6Ghz, its meaningless. its the absolute worst clock you can expect from it but you have to work for it not to run faster, like put a $5 cooler on it from 2003.

I have a Ryzen 5800X paired with an RX 7800 XT, in Nvidia terms its near equivalent to an RTX 4070 Super or an RTX 3090 from the previous gen, its a solid CPU for that level of GPU, it also claims to be 3.7Ghz, it actually runs at between 4.5Ghz and 4.9Ghz.

Certainly price to performance gaming wise sits with the 5700x3d at the moment. You could get the 5800x3d but you won't see much difference in performance unless you want the absolute best and are prepared to pay whatever it takes. Money better saved for upgrading the motherboard, cpu and RAM to the 9000 series when it becomes available.

I'd set up an email alert in the members market section (you should have access) and look out for a lower end GPU, GTX 1080 or even something like an RTX 2070 Super or a 6700XT from AMD as well as the upgrade to the CPU. Even something like a 5600x would be a significant bump in performance and combined with even a 1080 would be a good little machine.

Pretty much any 6-16 core 3000 or 5000 chip with the 5950X offering the highest performance.

On the APU side the 5700G offers the most graphics performance. Fast memory helps but you do trade some raw CPU performance compared to something like the 5800X to gain a few tflops of graphics processing power.

but its 3.0Ghz as opposed to 3.6 on the 2400g

Now is this down to a hideous cache?
The base clock is misleading. Trust us when we say the 5700X3D will blow the 2400G away.

For a start, the 5700X3D is actually 3 generations newer because despite the name, the 2400G only has first generation Zen cores and the 5700X3D's 3D cache gives it gaming performance that is a big upgrade even on other Zen 3 CPUs like the 5600X (though it does depend on the game).

In regards to the clocks, you're right that the 5700X3D does have lower clocks than comparable CPUs due to the cache, but it boosts way higher than 3.0 Ghz.

The CPU Speed should I would have thought, be good, but he is also saying that its not just the games, but converting videos and stuff is also slow... Again, I am not there as he lives in his flat in another town.
Is the 5700X3D the ideal CPU for heavily multithreaded work? No, it is not (since after all, this is a gaming CPU, that is the whole point), but it doesn't matter because you have double the number of cores and threads (compared to the 2400G) and they're much newer, so individually far more powerful.

If the priority is heavily multithreaded work then let us know, but assuming it is primarily games and some multithreaded work, then get the 5700X3D.

I have a 2400G in a deskmini, and a 5700X3D in my main desktop. It's not even close. Those old zen 1 cores weren't even that fast when the 2400G launched.
5700X3D or even just a 5700X if sticking to a budget (don't get the butchered non-X model though).

Oh,i'm really sorry to hear that. I wish you all the best bro.

Would echo most replies here.

Best APU: 5700G
Best CPU you can socket (for gaming): 5800x3d
Good enough compromise and cheaper: 5700x3d

If the multithread IS a big thing for some reason... 5900x/5950x depending how far you want to push it (either are a fraction behind in gaming vs x3d chips, for more cores overall)

The other day I got a possible touch of luck.
I have some pairs of RAM and I have a pair of 8GB Corsair Vengeance that are a matching pair for the ones in his PC.

I have paired them all up and that Ryzeon now has a nice 32GB.
I also plopped in an x580 and so its also half decent with basic games now too! - Even with the 2400G in it, its doing ok ( its is, shurrup! )

The only issue I am now thinking about is the RAM... its only 3000Mhz

I hear that Ryzen are very fussy when it comes to RAM.

Mine, I got as a bundle, and so I knew the RAM was right, but now, for this one, I am not 100% sure? - I am about to buy the CPU but the last thing I need, is to also buy RAM too! - Especially when I already have it. ( Although the x99 system has 8 slots LOL )

Will the 5700x3d or 5800x3d be ok with that RAM or will I need to buy RAM too?
I am honestly thinking of giving my lad my old 7700K setup and taking his but then if I do that, I wont get such a good CPU, and just plop for a better than the 2400G one, if it means to spend on RAM too - in that case, as it will be yet another spare PC then I am not going to waste too much money on it am I?

Argh, I want to help my lad out, but I am also fancying this too! - The Wife is moaning at me cos I got loads of Pcs and they are just piled up behind me doing nothing!

So anyway, will 3000Mhz RAM be ok with those other CPUs?
