I've always wanted a decent camera, I like looking at photography and I'm also hoping with the PHP/CSS/XHTML skills I've learnt, I may one day make a small computer hardware review site.

This has been an idea in my head for longer than I can remember, and just decided randomly that I would purchase a camera.

I went for the Nikon D40, which I believe is a good DSLR for beginners reading around, although I know it's hardly top specification and it should do me well.

I'll let you guys know how I get on and hopefully post some images, completely novice so don't really understand how to manipulate settings such as ISO for different situations.

First post in this section I believe, I just hope the camera doesn't end up in a for sale thread later on in time

I'd recommend reading through Jodie Coston's online photography course. Helped me hugely when I first had an interest in photography. If you have a gander at the site and read your camera's manual to get to grips with the settings, you should be well on your way to having a decent understanding of what you are doing

If you've always wanted a decent camera, how does that make it random That you baught a camera? :confused:

Anyway, I also have a d40x and it's a great camera once you get uesd to it. I can actually take nicer looking photos on my d40x than my brother can on his Canon 30D, but thats only because he dosent know how to use his camera

As I said, I've wanted one for years and always toyed with the idea but always bout other things, mainly computer parts.

Then out of no where tonight, just randomly bought one without even a thought as to what I was doing.

I was pointed to that model by someone who does wedding photography as a career.

I hope I get over the hurdle your brother faces.

Sometimes it happens that way.

I had been lusting after DSLR since the EOS DCS3

I got up one morning, in the Ibis next to Euston Station. I failed to pass the camera store round the corner.

By teatime I had a 5D and a 100-400L.

Just to let you know that 'small' hardware review sites are in probably one of the largest saturated markets on the web, and in my humble opinion I don't think it's worth it, you won't make peanuts from advertising revenue, and while you may enjoy it yourself, you'll slow down and it'll cease to be worth it. What will you have in order to challenge the high-fliers? or turn people away from the top few spots on google?

I do suggest reviewing a product or too if you've got a gain in it, but people do it on blogs, and blogs are free, i'm just saying don't make it a capital venture and don't think you'll attract an audience worthwhile.

Enjoy the camera, I'm getting a dslr very soon too and can't wait.

I know a niche where very little reviews sites actually concentrate on, or fail to be regarded as accurate. I know I can fill that niche. There are sites out there (mainly one) which has good information on but it's very old school.

Bandwidth is cheap enough to start out and all places do start out small, JonnyGuru started out as a personal blog.

I'll want to use the camera for more than this though, but it will be a task I would like to use the camera with.
