Hello,

I'm soon to be in the market for a couple of new drives and wondered which manufacturer people reckon is currently making the most reliable drives?

I know some people here have had bad things to say about Maxtors but personally I've had no problems with them, in fact the only drive I've ever had fail on me was a Western Digital.

Other than that I'm leaning towards trying a Samsung this time as I've read they are generally quiet and very reliable.

Thanks for replies

id say there all pretty much as reliable as each other
its all down to luck really

but id avoid maxtor at all costs

Have a look at the poll on the first hard drive failures as that might help give a rough idea, however note that the quantities that are sold by each manufacturer is not necessarily taken into account. Seagate might look like it has a comparatively large amount compared to Samsung I suppose but it is also the largest manufacturer(it bought Maxtor not too long ago), I'd think about Hitachi but my next drive will be a Seagate 7200.10 unless someone comes out with something much better than the 7200.10 series. :)

Thanks thats interesting. Seems like Maxtor have a significant lead.

I think I'm probably going with Samsung this time, they seem one of the most reliable.

Don't trust that - all the others have been in the HDU industry longer and sell FAR more drives.

Seagate are the oldest and longest standing manufacturer - having invented the 3.5" desktop hard drive. I would personally say Hitachi or Seagate - despite IBM having a large number, this was due to the 2 faulty designed models. Samsung and Fujitsu are really on a different scale (as to some extent Hitachi, but Hitachi/IBM as they are/used to be is actually a good company but for the problems with the GXP75 and GXP60).
