Howdy,

Not sure if there is really an answer to this, but I want to know if anyone feels there is a superior brand of HDD that is more reliable then others. When I say reliable, I mean less chance of conking out?

I remember at my old firm, we had plenty of Maxtor HDD's in computers, and they kept dying and I was informed that they where rubbish (harsher language was used at the time, but I won't reiterate that here :) ), although I was skeptical and just assumed it was the fact they where old.

Anyway I have a server running at home, and the Primary disk (that stores all the websites I build) is a Maxtor... So naturally I'm slightly worried? I have backups being made, but thats besides the point, I'd rather not go through the aggro of losing data if it can be avoided.

So I'm considering getting a new HDD to replace the Maxtor, and just want to know what brand to consider? I don't mind splashing out extra £££ for a more reliable disk!

Its SATAII aswell btw!

Any ideas appreciated!

p.s. If possible, the quieter the better also :)

Cheers Pete, I actually currently use a Samsung Spinpoint in my Desktop, I have no probs with it, but just want to know what the general consensus is on HDD brands.

Although I've never used one, I've always head good things about Western Digital, and I like the look of Western Digital Caviar RE 160GB 1600YS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM @ http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-111-WD

Although I have also heard good things bout Seagate, and you have just recommended them also, so might go for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB ST3160811AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM @ http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-093-SE

The WD has 16mb Cache, opposed to the Seagate's 8mb, and both have 5 year warrentys... so its deffo out of those two!

cheers
