Hi all,
After some advice for a cheap tax, reliable, spacious, not outrageous to fix, economical, 4x4 SUV?

Been looking at Volvo XC90, VW Toureg/Tiguan, Land Rover Discovery 4, and even considering the Ssangyong Turismo.
We'd like a pick-up but they just don't have enough load bay to chuck logs in or the occasional sofa.

We'd like a do-it-all car but realise we may have to just get a trailer. Don't want to be paying £600+ road tax for a vehicle that might not be used much except for a 200mile drive every month.

Any ideas?

Most mid-size SUVs with the rear seats down are only the same through to about 20cm longer than the load bed on a dual-cab pickup - if you want a decent bit more space you'd need to look at the bigger SUVs like the X-Trail, etc. though the Discovery 4 I believe clocks in around 1.9m boot length with the seats down.

My partner keeps mentioning how her Zafira was fantastic as a do-all car. The trouble is they don't do 4wd which we'll need in Wales as the A roads aren't even B roads in England certainly not wide so off-roading will be needed.
I think a pick-up like an L200 would be fine, then get a box trailer for big stuff, but she would like it in one.

We were recommended a Discovery 4, but we're keeping eyes open. The VW Tiguan surprised us as it's actually quite a decent size with seats down.

I test drove the Volvo and felt it‘s Extremely over priced. The Santa Fe is nice but they are hard to find used, and they hold their price. Get an insurance quote first if you consider anything from Land Rover and I promise you’ll be shocked and put off.

Yeah, A3 is £300 to £1000 for Land Rover Discovery for same circumstances. Hmmmm lol.
Plus £30 tax to £675 lol.

Santa Fe's look interesting, as does the Skoda Superb.if it was down to me I'd be happy with a V70 and towbar tbh lol.

There seems to be a big jump in price whenever Euro 6 is factored in for these. Anything Euro 5 diesel has tanked in value it would seem. Kia Sorrento might also be worth a look?

ULEZ. Euro 5 = pay, euro 6 = no. If you never drive in the Ulez zone you can grab some serious bargains atm.

And the W*lsh have proven they give zero ***** by restricting the entire country to 20mph lol.
Really, was down in Port Talbot for a funeral in October and didn't see any extra 20 mph zones than were there earlier in the year, spoke to my cousin and he said even though the press were reporting it they hadn't had any extra 20 zones added.

My missus always brings up our ols Grand scenic similarly, it was a small car with masses of space, all of our SUV since have been massive cars with low interior space.

Those sort of MPVs were great, just like vans :D

As for other options how about a Renault Koleos, bound to have suffered massive depreciation by now, bigger than an X trail with same 4wd running gear in 2.0, not as big as a Kodiac. (Foot print for parking etc.)

Kodiaq is another good shout.

Kodiaq looks decent so looking for one to have a proper look at.
The DSG gearbox looks like it could be problematic past 80,000 miles.
Is it? If regular fluid changes is it good for 150000 miles?
Also mentions electric failures and £1000 bills, is this a worry?

It's all just standard VW stuff, so consistent issues across the VAG brands but due to popularity of that fixing it should be easy enough and reasonable cost if you have an issue, many don't.

Personally I've really gone off VW - far too many people I know with new VW cars have had issues including my brother having the AC automatically turning the temperature up until it hit max over a few minutes which took 3 months and over 4 grand to fix (VW reluctantly eventually picked up the bill), colleagues have had issues with the lights - randomly cutting out entirely until vehicle restarted, electric windows - opening themselves at random including when there should be no power to them..., driving aids going nuts, etc. etc. most of which took months to get fixed, large bills and VW being difficult over picking up the bill for something which was plainly never right in the first place and they should be getting right on top of rectifying.

Think we have a winner with the kodiaq. Just had a look at one and very spacious, well specced. Had DSG but no one's perfect lol.

Certainly something to look at. I've known people to have more problems with BMW's to be honest so I'm going in eyes open. Make sure we get one with a warranty.

I think this car will be one we don't get rid of for a long time.
