Most useless implementation of technology?

I have seen wifi enabled coffee scales, not machines, but weighing scales. Here is one of the many....why? There is a screen there showing the weigh as I pour coffee into it...Why do I need to or want to look away and look at my phone instead?

This is far from useless, it allows it to be used for brew by weight. The BooKoo scales work with the shotstopper mod for the lamarzocco machines so you can get it to shut off the machine at a certain weight output.

The only network connected washing/dryer I think is useful is at self use hotel laundry where if you go back to your room you can see how long it has left to do at the TV in your room.

At home, you can just hear it anyway.

I can't hear my washing machine finishing, the notification is actually really useful...

i use the display on my z63 just to show temps, seems to be as useful a place as possible to show it?

Maybe but I prefer to look at my screen when I'm using my PC rather than looking in the case.

Also, if you build your PC properly then there's really no need to monitor temperatures once you know it's stable.
Plus it just adds needless cost to something you can see for free on your screen with the click of a button

Do you know how absurd that is? Not only you need a particular machine, you now need to buy a mod for it in order to get it to work. Or buy a particular compatible coffee machine?

All because you are too lazy to press stop...you are right there to press start, you can't stay there for 30 seconds to press stop?

I love my coffee as much as the next guy but there comes to a point where you are just there to waste money to get the toys and not the coffee.

Yeah, it's not enough that I have this £200 scales, I need a £4,000 coffee machine too....but wait, I also need a mod for this £4,000 coffee machine. Yes I know the rebuttal is this is for people with £4,000 to spend on a coffee machine to get this scale and not the other way round....yet can't stay there for 30 seconds....I mean if you care for your coffee that much to pay £4,000 for a machine you would care enough to stay there to do everything manually like press stop when you are already there to press start.

Say it out loud with me…” I bought this £200 scales to work with my £4,000 coffee machine but it won’t without a £160 mod”

brew by weight is obviously something that is very desirable as more and more machines are supporting it, and it makes sense why. Consistency is one of the most important things in coffee, so being able to stop on the same output every time automatically is actually very useful, ESPECIALLY if you're sharing that machine with someone else who doesnt want the hassle of having to remember when to stop it etc, brew by weight allows it to be the same output every time and lets you do other things, e.g. focus on steaming the milk or whatever.

Those scales work natively with some machines like the Decent, and La Marzocco's newer machines like the Mini R work natively with the Acaia scales. lack of standardisation is annoying i guess, but just because you dont see the point it doesn't mean others dont.

Nothing wrong with mods, if people want to do them and enable functionality only available on more expensive models etc...I think i could actually get those scales to work with my coffee machine using my home assistant setup for free :p

I wish I had a wifi enabled fridge, could keep track of how much cheese I'm eating during the night compared to others in my home.

I expect an "AI" toothbrush to make an appearance in the next year or 2.
Too late :D

Not me eyeing up buying the ShotStopper for my Micra the other day.. I'm already well beyond the point of diminishing returns, but I like coffee and I like taking things apart so it's just a hobby for me.

I am fully aware how important accuracy is when it comes to coffee....you should read my post about coffee roasting where i measured the density and dehydration percentage from green beans to roasted to 2 digits to the right of the decimal point accuracy...It doesn't remove that fact that you are right there to press start, you can be there within 30seconds to press stop. Besides, there is a delay in between stop and it actually stopping...there is always that drip or 2...i mean accuracy smooshy, you are like 2ml out at that point. :p

p.s. as for the washing machine....tell me your house is big without telling my your house is big.

I never got the theory behind the slow cooker

As much as it maybe a good idea, i just never found i ever used it

I dont like waiting all day for my food

If i want something to eat, I want it quickly

They're pretty rubbish really. Pressure cooker has always been superior in my eyes.

Pretty much anything being WiFi enabled is pointless and a potential point of failure.

Our washtower and dishwasher are both WiFi Connected/Smart and I think it's quite helpful. Handy if you're out and want to see how much longer the cycle has remaining and for the dishwasher we get notifications when it's finished but more importantly when it's running low on rinse aid.

Personally I'd have a load of other devices wifi connected as more often than not it's a nice little QoL upgrade over the non-wifi connected ones

I assume many of these highly accurate low weight scales are not being used to measure out coffee !

.

Nope they factor that in and stop to account for that.

Plus if you're focused on steaming the milk it's nice to know it will shut off by itself at exactly the right point, given you're trying to get the milk and the espresso finished as close together as possible.

Where do you stop with anything though? Why have pressure set automatically why not just do it completely manually
