Hello all. Just asking for peoples opinions. My fiesta has failed on 'Offside Front wheel bearing rough when rotated' [2.5.A.2].

When I questioned the examiner, he said 'theres no play in it, just sounds rough when under the car. The MOT station is ATS, and I feel this was the mistake in the first place. Theres no play in the wheel up or down, the wheel rolls freely enough and theres no noise from the wheel at motorway speeds. The Car has only covered 63,000 miles.

Now do I get the repair done (elsewhere, not paying their prices) or chance it with another MOT station?

I'd go with an MOT from another place. If they pass it, fairs fair and you can then argue with the first place about getting a refund or whatever.

If they fail it, then life goes on and you've only lost 30 quid or so.

Have you jacked the car up yourself and spun the wheel?
:)

Yes, and I can't hear or feel anything on one side that isn't on the other

a bearing does not have to have play in it to be worn and you wont necessarily hear a rough bearing when driving also

The problem I have is, this seems to be such a subjective fail. I cannot see or hear or feel anything out of the ordinary on that bearing. If it were a clear cut problem then I wouldn't hesitate to get it sorted, but this comes across as clutching at straws.

He won't fail it for the sake of it, plus its a pain in the ass of a job for them.

Why do you think you have a better 'feel' for a bearing than an MOT tester?

If your confident there is nothing wrong with it then take it back and get it re-tested for free. Tell them you had if replaced and see what happens.

They would. MOT testers can be right .... at times.

For example, same tester, same LED sidelight, in one car, it passed, in another, it failed.

If they were failing something for the hell of it, it'd be brake pads or tyres or like Kwikfit did to me - headlight aim. I couldn't contain my laugher when they said they could fix my headlight aim for me for £30 - hell I can adjust the control on the dash myself for free!

Were they the same type of car with the same design of headlights? If not, what's your point?
