MOT Question

You can still find garages that have not yet upgraded & will still use the old type stamped MOT, apparently the end of March is the upgrade deadline

What a bloody stupid system. You take a morning off work, drive to the garage for your MOT and it fails on a leaking CV joint. So, you right the manufacturer for one but stock won't be in for 7 days. But you cannot keep using your car, even though it has a month of the old certificate remaining, because it has now failed the MOT and is considered unsafe to drive.
What about welding? You take the car for MOT, it fails on rotten sills - these are not jobs that can be knocked out on the spot in under half an hour, and often MOT testing stations do not repair cars, the just test them. How are you meant to get your car to the nearest place where it can be welded? Magic? Lets be honest, a trailer is hardly a practical option for most people.
What if you're place of repair is your driveway? Do you have to pre-book your own driveway space to repair the car?

What if you ring the local welder but he says he can't fit it in until next week? The MOT centre won't let you leave the car there, you can't take it to the welder as he doesn't have room yet.... so what are you supposed to do with the car in the meantime?

It's a farce if you ask me.

Typical government run scheme if you ask me mate :D ,you wouldn't believe (on second thoughts you probably would) the problems & teething trouble this system has had , the computer equipment they are using is obsolete stock & so antiquated it's unbelieveable ,We actually had to have an old style analogue phone line put back in my station for it to work as it's totally incompatible with broadband or any digital phone system:rolleyes:

You are allowed to drive it to and FROM the MOT station, so you can drive it home and then re-book it and drive it back.

Thanks for all the replies folks, lets just hope there isnt anything too major at its MOT :( and the sooner I get a new car the better. Please now await the 'What should I look out for when buying a Mk 4 VW Golf thread' :p
