Hi,

Earlier in the year my wife managed to not see a large wooden post and put a nice dent in the door of her i30. More recently another issue has reared it's ugly head in that the door can no longer be opened from the inside although it still functions fine from the outside. Everything else about the door still works (locks, windows etc).

The door is the front passenger door. Would the inability to open the door from the inside constitute an MOT failure?

It probably would fail if noticed (An inability to open the door in an emergency would be a safety issue) although it's not likely to be tested so you'd probably get away with it.

Section 6.2:

B. Doors
1. Open and close the driver’s and passenger’s
doors. Check that:
a. each door latches securely in the closed
position
b. the driver’s and front passenger doors can
be opened from both inside and outside the
vehicle

That's a good point although it was working then just stopped. Also, the handle offers no resistance when used. I will check though.

almost definitely the hook cable that goes from the outside handle/lock to the interior handle. Its a very simple fix if you know how to do it. Happened to me a couple months ago. You just take the door card off, (in my case you then take the window out) and then another panel, and then you can access both ends of the cable. It was a £3 fix for me (for the new cable) reckon a garage would charge you 60 quid.

definite MOT failure. so you'd need a dogey garage or just a lazy one!

Thanks everyone for your comments, I need to get the bodywork fixed at some point so will ask them about the door lock at the same time.

Partially correct. The rear doors don't need top open from both inside and outside, just the front

My Audi S6 failed because I couldn't open the rear passenger door (deadlock mech gets waterlogged and packs up thanks to a poor design). Cost an absolute fortune to sort out in the end :/

Reason(s) for failure
Nearside Rear passenger door cannot be opened from outside the vehicle (6.2.B.1c)

Maybe I should have been clearer...

Both FRONT doors must be able to be opened from inside and outside
All other doors must only need to be opened from outside
