Just a quick question, My mot on my car is Valid until 23rd of September. Does not sound 100% obvious to me but does that mean that the MOT will be valid on the 23rd. Or does it run out on the 23rd and therefore cant drive it on the 23rd?

Ohhh! Hope not!

Just checked and I was wrong :p.

Be careful though because Lockdown was 6 months ago and M.O.T's were extended 6 months. Garages are rammed. My car failed its M.O.T on the 16th because I didn't check my tail lights (Broken rear loom, took me ten minutes to fix) and I have my retest tomorrow!

Only extended if your MOT was due during lockdown.

They really could have thought a bit longer term with the MOT thing, now they've created (for a few years at least) a really busy period with twice as many tests as normal and a dormant period where barely any cars will be due.

They should have given the 6 month grace but retest only goes to original expired date but it is too late now. Sucks for me as one of my cars has a September M.O.T. will try getting it in a month early now!

All newer cars registered in the other months will still need doing though for their first MOT's.

Yeah but that's going to be a relative trickle of newer cars in comparison, it'll be a good few years before the workload is spread back out across all 12 months the way it used to be.

I had no problems booking either my bike or car in for their MOTs over the last couple of weeks, doesn't seem like it's made that much difference.
I foresee plenty of people driving around without an MOT because now they've got even less idea than normal when it runs out.

I got an MOT next day a couple of weeks ago, I don't think garages are as rammed as the media may have you believe.

They must have been rolling along with serious spare capacity then.

Quick google suggests that in the last few years, generally about 65 to 70% of vehicles on the road are of the age they require an MOT. Total number of vehicles about 38 million. So lets say 25 million needing MOTs, that's just over 2 million per month if you assume they're mostly spread out evenly (I know in reality there are probably small peaks for new reg plate dates).

In fact, we won't actually be seeing the effects yet when you think about it - the 6 month exemption came into play very end of March/early April, so moving all those MOTs on 6 months, it'll be October onwards that demand is going to start increasing because they'll effectively be dealing with April and October MOT demand. August/September won't have had a demand increase, because they won't have had Feb/Mar MOT deferrals.

We'll see over the next 2 months or so whether they get rammed or not.

Perhaps it is just certain garages. My local garage who I have used for the past ten years couldn't fit me in for 11th. Only free on the 16th and just had my retest today on the 22nd where it has passed. (Still kicking myself for not checking my lights the first time!)
