MOT

BTW FOX, i'd have ran it a second time. I'd have thought the same as you, hmmm 07 BMW failing emissions, thats strange, lets give it a bit longer to warm up and try again. Either that or test drive it then try again.

And this is the crux of my dissapointment. I'm glad you've got a bit of common sense! It seemed none of this happened, they just went 'computer say no' and issued a fail.

Depending on the customers level of knowledge this could have been a disaster - what if the owner of the now failed car had said 'oh, can you replace my cats then please?'

£1k for nothing!

What is the alternative to the rollers and do most MOT stations have the alternative?

The alternative is the decelerometer and every MOT station has one. Used for basically any 4wd/awd car that can't run in 2wd, any car with an LSD, or is diff locked in any other way. It's easier to pass a brake test with a decelero than the brake rollers too :D It usually sayes on the VT40 (mot check list) if the car is unsuitable for testing on brake rollers, but don't assume the tester knows that or bothers to read that. ALWAYS tell the tester when you present the car or you may find they aren't liable for any damaged caused.

Awesome, the car was serviced by a Monaro speacialist 500miles ago and I've had four tyres fitted today with 80% of brake life remaining so should sail through. :)

1. Computer diagnostic check - either fix fault listed or...
2. Bottle of CAT cleaner in the fuel, take it for a blast, almost guarenteed pass. No idea what's in the stuff we have but it's bloody amazing how far it can take the emissions down.

Woah.

Quick update... Failed on the windscreen and a tyre. Checked my insurance regarding the windscreen and just had to pay a £65 excess, only downside being is this years no claims gets frozen. They will also swap over my spare £20!

Fairly happy with the outcome, just wish I had replaced the wiper blades sooner!

I feel sad that I missed this thread the first time round :(.

What I've been told is if you're taking it to somewhere that checks emissions, absolutely rag it there (first gear y0!) so the cat is ****ing hot! Or the best advice, find someone that doesn't check emissions.

My ST sailed through it's MOT yesterday with no advisories, MOT bloke said its one of the best examples he as seen :)

I nearly fell over as i have always had to dish out monies to get my old car through its MOT so was expecting the same.

Ah... and this is when I remember how lucky I am to have a dad who has used the same MOT station for 1000s of MOTs. In the words of Queen Victoria: "failure - the possibilities do not exist" :D

Sounds like a fundamental mistake was made by the original tester then, or the BMW dealer wanted to keep you happy and just passed the car.

usually the opposite, they will change things they don't need to sometimes of its slightly out of spec. the fact they didn't touch it speaks volumes to me.

when i had my MOT done at BMW they advised that the wipers had some small wear on them. the performance was fine but they still put on an advisory!

reality is when you go to MOT places that have a workshop, they have a potential conflict of interest. better to go to a council run location for an honest appraisal, i've taken all my cars to council run centres barring the one with BMW as it was under warranty at the time (all faults fixed if found)
