Mothball

The buttons look class - different jobs = different buttons, nice

Did you try mounting the grill on the inside of the case? (giveing a 2mm shadow gap)
Panel,case,grill,fan (outside to in)
The grill looks very dominant atm, but that's me - the pre-grill photos look 'cleaner'
Spray can of black plasi dip or paint will also lessen the impact,
unless that's the plan! - found some orange / neon power coat in a cupboard :)

I'm sure someone will menton the bottom four rivets not lining up.
My wife would not be able to see that on a daily basis with out giving me 'the look'
Took me 15 years of marriage to convice her that not ALL asymmetic designs are sporn of the devil

Looking forward to the next installment - keep up the good work.

Yeah the buttons tie in just right I reckon :D

And yes I did see what the grill looked like mounted internally, I could have gone either way but preferred the bold, dominant, in your face look of the brushed stainless.

lolol @ The Wife

And thank you for the support it's much appreciated :)

Personally will try to powder coat the grill to a darker grey color...

From my initial post -

"Did I also mention that to create the aforementioned case front I’ll be using nothing except the materials I have lying around and with the exception of a new motherboard everything else will be donated if you like from another build..."

It would kind of go against my self made brief :)

A glimpse of the future...

And here's what has prompted the change, from this -

To This -

Say hello to the newly unboxed Asus P8Z77-I DELUXE, I picked it up for a steal at £70; I've always lusted after one of these

More progress...

Time to remove some bits from the donar case :D

Spot the difference anyone?

My prized MNPCTech Diamond Knurl case feet were made for this chassis

The new case floor cut and test fitted for size.

That's the floor installed and the motherboard in place for a little sizing up exercise.

And this will give you an indication of where I'm going with this... ;)

The Asus P8Z77-I DELUXE pre final install -

You''ll notice I've used a non standard mounting kit for an AIO.

For such a small board no lack of connectivity -

  • 4 x USB 2.0
  • 1 x Optical S/PDIF out
  • 1 x DVI
  • 1 x DisplayPort
  • 2 x Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • 1 x HDMI
  • 1 x Gigabit LAN (RJ45)
  • 4 x USB 3.0 ports
  • 2 x eSATA 3Gb/s
  • Bluetooth

I've also used a laser cut universal stainless steel backplate I found, I can't remember what I had it made up for but it's found a home now :D

I'll leave you with a wee tease pic also :p

Bumper Update

First up a necessary task -

This is the top of the front panel looking through the drive bays.

I've fabricated a retention plate for the inside, this serves to secure the top of the front pant flush to the case frame and prevent warping, further still it also adds additional rigidity.

The front fan assembly installed proper.

240mm E22 FG01 stainless steel fan grill on the inside.

240mm E22 FG03 stainless steel fan grill on the outside.

And this is where a mental image starts to manifest itself proper in the physical form ;)

Now that's where I've been coming from :D

Those E22 looks really nice :)

Does it take you long to clean off the sticker residue on them?

I have got a few of those for my previous build and the sticker residues on them needs a bit of work to clean off :(

Thank you :)

And to clarify, what are you wanting to remove the sticker residue from? Your fans?

And here's the end result...

Mothball - I think it just goes to show that you don't have to throw hundreds at a case to create something half decent; not a laser cutter, CNC or SketchUp design in sight, just the translation of a mental image into the physical form with hand held tools and available materials to hand ;)
