Motherboard and sata cables

Ok so a really noob question here if you don't mind helping

Bought some second hand gear - socket 775 E8400 CPU/mobo but noticed I haven't got any sata cables. The mobo is SATA 3Gb/s and hard drive is either 3Gb/s or 6GB/s.

First question - Do I need specific sata cable to get the most speed?

Second question - Can I use a 6GB/s drive on a 3GB/s mobo and vice versa?

However, a SATA III drive will be handicapped by a SATA II interface, particularly an SSD.

Yeah I'm just using mechanical drives, but one drive is old and another is quite new. Just wondered if I could use them on the motherboard (GA-EP41-UD3L).
