Motherboard burnt?

I bought a B850-E STRIX GAMING WiFi from the rainforest as used mint for a decent discount. It arrived and looks completely unused I I tested it for a couple of hours then went to install a different CPU and contact frame and saw some concerning marks under the CPU retainer.

I'm guessing I should stop using this and return it rather than risk killing my hardware?



Any thoughts appreciated.

Yup, don't even risk it. What does the back look like?

Looks fine on the back. The marks are right in the middle of where the CPU bar latches

What does the reverse side look like corresponding with the marks ?

That was an emotional rollercoaster! I think maybe some paste residue got into the gap in the retainer or something like that.
No marks on the back and it's clean now.

In the first photo it looked like the traces had burnt through so that must be a relief for you

How strange, they looked exactly like burn marks in the first photo and would have had me in panic mode!!

As you say, I agree and think it looks like something was spilled onto the board while in use and at a fairly high temperature. So possibly some sort of evaporation marks?

Personally I would try and return it and get a replacement.
