Hello all,
THis is my first post so please be patient with me.
My Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus motherboard just died. If I replace it with the same board and set up the HDD's exactly the same, will my system just boot up? I'm after retrieving the data more than anything (4 x HDD)set up as a raid mirror and stipe)
Many thanks
Chris

Yes, it will probably be fine. It depends when the board died. If it died with a write going on it may wel;l have taken the array out as well. The NForce RAID controller has a very dubious reputation.

It's too late now, I know, but FFS back it up next time;)

Thanks for the replies - that sounds positive at least.
So would I be best off going for exactly the same board or would any nvidia based board be good? I now I could not read the drives in through my new Abit IP35 Pro setup.
Many thanks
Chris

You need one with the right NForce 4 RAID controller. So you need the same Southbridge as your existing board, which could be difficult as if I recall correctly, your chipset was a bit of a mongrel. You could try an ASUS P5N-E SLi from B-grade or an ASUS P5N32-E, also B-grade. And they even have a P5N32-E Plus (don't do it! - it's a terrible motherboard)

The pricing on the P5N-E SLi is a bit dodgy though - they never, ever sold for £115, so it's a bit naughty to try and say they did.

Sorry, but I'm not very good at this - which board would you recommend out of the 3 you mention - well 2 actually discounting the Plus version (the one that I have fried ). Are there many differences between ASUS P5N32-E and the Plus version?
Would be nice to have a back up system but much more important to retrieve all that important data.
Many thanks
CHris

Well, if you were feeling naughty - and I wouldn't suggest you do this at all, but you could buy one of the P5N32-E B-grade boards, test it for 10 days under the DSR (probably long enough to recover your data) and return it under the DSR. Then load your data onto your new RAID array, built on something on a P45 basis (Intel ICH10R RAID - much more stable than NForce).;)

Sorry, one last thing.... if a 680 nvidia chip will do, will the striker extreme be of any use?
Chris

You do realise that if I swear on here, I can get suspended, don't you? That board is junk. ASUS should have been ashamed of themselves for releasing it. If you're going to buy a 680i board, then get an EVGA.

ok, now I am confused (not difficult I know - but please be gentle). If I buy a P45 board, are you saying I will be able to retreive the data? Can't seem to do it with my P35 board. If not, exactly what board should I get?

I don't see what is confusing. What I was suggesting was that you could buy a B-grade P5N32-E, use it to recover the data from your RAID array to some form of backup, then return the board within 10 days under the distanmce selling regulations, which you would be perfectly entitled to do, if you weren't satisfied with it. Then you could buy a new board (A P45 board) and use that instead.

Get the P5N32-E from B-grade, it's a straight replacement for what you have now and therefore has the best chance of working.

Crystal......... errrrr sort of... lol
So buy the P5N32-E, sort out my problem and then get a different board.
Which board do you recommend then?
Chris

Anything based on the P45 chipset should do you, although there are starting to be some real bargains on P35 and X38 boards now as well. I'd avoid the X48 boards are they don't really juistify the big price-hike over the X38 boards really.

P45 eg. ASUS P5Q is very much flavour of the month though.
