Right , my HTPC build gear arrived today , went with a MSI 970A G46 , 8 gig Xms 3, 500w OCZ modular PSU and a B-Grade FX 8350.

Started with the basics, installed the board , mem , Cpu and power supply and went to power up to check everything.

Fans/lights powered up then instantly went off.

Checked everything again to make sure everything was seated and correct.

Fans/lights powered up then instantly went off.

However if i unplug the 12v 6 pin connector the board powers up fine.

I'm at a bit of a loss really

Any help would be appreciated

You should be plugging in the 8-Pin EPS Connector into the Cpu power port, sounds like you are using a PCI-E connector.

no nothing, however i *think* i may have found the problem, I tried the 4 pin atx cable and this has the same effect , however i just tried a cheap psu that i had hanging around , this however only has a single 4 pin cpu power line and requires a splitter but with that plugged in the board powers up and the 4 cpu phase led's light up, however as i dont have a splitter its hardly conclusive but i think its pointing towards an iffy psu.

Is it possible to have a faulty 12v ATX plug on both the 4 and 8 pin plugs ? , the system is fine now with the cheap spare psu but wont do anything with the OCZ one

I think youve answered your question. If the PSU wont fire it up then the PSU is to blame. I don't see the need for pinning down "exactly" which bit of it unless you want to really help the guys doing the RMA.

Don't use it with a cheap psu or you may end up regretting it. 8350's can draw a lot of power and might prove to be too much for a cheap psu. Wait until you get a replacement.

RMA the OCZ and get the Antec 520W, better quality Psu.

Went with a corsair in the end but thanks for the advice, and yeah i like to know why things break not only that their broken lol :D
