Motherboard seems to have failed – Time for an upgrade!

Hi guys and girls

Looks like my motherboard has finally decided to retire (after 9 years service). It was the only original part left from the system I built in 2007. The ASUS P5K Deluxe. Current system in sig. Will be adding a Samsung 850 Evo 1TB SSD as part of the upgrade.

So thinking of using this opportunity to upgrade the main bits. Thinking about a motherboard bundle or separates for the Mobo, CPU & memory.

I don’t game on it anymore. It will be used for browsing, managing my photos (some basic editing) and logging onto my work server when working from home.

I’ve been out of the PC scene for a few years now so not up on the latest kit.

What do you guys recommend?

I have had a read on some other threads and the below seem to be recommended:

Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI - Intel Core i5 6600K Bundle **£20 Saving**

Kingston Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C15 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (HX424C15FB2K2/1

Will need a cooler with the 6600k. What options are there? Is the 1151 socket the same as the 1150 as none of the coolers mention 1151?

I have a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme currently on a 775 socket. Is there a bracket for the 1151 socket?

That would give you a hell of a upgrade. I don't believe the 6600k comes with a cooler so you will be needing one of those as well. Sockets 1156/1155/1150/1151 all have the same cooler spacing so if a cooler states that it will fit one it will fit them all. There is a socket 1156 bolt through kit for your cooler but it shows up as end of life everywhere I have checked. You could try contacting Thermalright directly to see if they can sort you out with one. It's a damn good cooler still which makes it even more frustrating.

Yeah my PC is around 7-9 years old based on the key parts

Was thinking about upgrading in 2012 but when I put a SSD in there in 4 years ago it felt like a new machine (for my limited use) so didn't upgrade anything else at that time.

So now time to have that massive upgrade due to a dead mobo :cool:

Ah thanks for the info on the cooler fittings. Think I'll get a new one.

What are the recommended coolers?

I am a bit out of touch with air coolers but the Raijintek ones are very good value for money (stay well clear of the Tritons as they are well known for leaking). If you fancy trying a AIO water cooler take a look at the very reasonably priced Antec ones.

The Rajintek Themis is just as good as the Coolermaster 212 Evo, plus it's easier to fit IMO. The Antec AIOs are very good value, I've got the H600, plus they don't have the leak issues of the Triton.
