Hi Folks,

I passed my car test around 2005 so I have a full UK driving licence for a car.
Now, I understand that I must pass a CBT? test in order to ride a bike upto 125cc but I don't understand what happens from here onwards - do I have to pass a motocycle test again in order to ride a larger bike than 125cc and does already having a driving licence make any difference.

Regards

Firstly we have a nice little sub forum for bikers, we don't like our threads clogged up with unimportant threads, so pop to the Bikers Cafe sub forum within the Motors forum. This thread will be moved there once a mod sees it and could be moved before I've finished typing.

As you passed your car test in 05 I can tell you're over 24. Yes a CBT is just to allow you to ride a 125 on the road and you'll still need to take a theory and hazard perception test specific for bikes, a MOD 1 off road test AND your MOD 2 on road test to get a full licence. As you're over 24 you could do a DAS and pass the tests on a big bike and ten be able to ride any bike subject to insurance.

And no, your car licence means nothing towards your bike licence.

Cheap, mate. Cheap.
You literally cannot fail the CBT anyway, £75 or around that?

Bike test when i done it was something along the lines of £300 for a 2 day + test. Used my own bike. I was younger, so not sure how it works with older people...but i was limited to 33bhp on my license for 2 years (can have any bike you want, needs to be limited - but again, no idea how that works)

Edit:

Seems its changed a bit.

I was just quoted £500 as an approximate to do the whole thing - I expected it to be less considering I'm already a road user. DVLA need not be so hard on experienced drivers imho but its a money making exercise, endorsed by the government.
I suppose that I can buy a nice bike that I want, then do it on that, rather than having to buy a smaller one then sell it passing.

If you get the bike bug then it'll be worth every penny.

I always had the bike bug since I had a few bikes when I was 16-18 yo, I always said I would ride but life got in the way. The roads have changed since then but I love the idea and it means the missus can have the car in the day when I use it for work - weather permitting!

It's not a conspiracy, lol.
Being a car driver means nothing on a bike, because they're different vehicles. The skills to driving a car, wont translate on a bike. Hence separate tests, and bikes being limited for learners.

£500 is reasonable as well, as i assume that includes the cost of CBT (which, again...impossible to fail)

I don't even think you need to own a bike prior, you can go straight in and get a big boy license? (someone correct me?) so if you wanted, you can pass your DAS or whatever it's called and get a decent bike from the off.

No you don't as all training schools should have the bikes needed for all the confusing aspects of the modern bike licensing system. If someone who is at least 24 decides they want to get on bikes their best bet is just do a DAS and avoid all the ********.

So if you're over 24 you can do your 2 or 3 day course + CBT, pass and go into any garage and buy whatever bike you want, no restrictions?

Mad :p

Well worth £500 if that's the case.

Yep, that's exactly how it is. A 17 year old could, in theory, legally jump into their dads Bugatti Veyron after passing their test. At least on bikes there is a progression at that age.

£500 is good, especially if you pass first time. It'll get expensive if you fail (re-book, lessons while you wait for your next go, etc.), but still not too bad really.

Also depends on how quickly you learn. Some DAS courses do 2-3 days, others are longer for less experienced people. You need to talk to them really about what happens if you fail, their prices for 1-2 hour lessons if you need to top up while waiting for re-test and how long they expect you to wait for a re-test (some test centres pre-book slots, so you can re-test as soon as the DVLA allow it).

The only skill that translates from already being a road user is knowing how the roads work (signs, road markings, etc.)

I've just sorted my DAS course after doing my CBT last October both combined as long as I pass first time will have come to £600, there's no way I could get a car licence for that sort of money and riding a bike is a lot more fun.

Dunno, you can get a car licence a lot cheaper if you're good. £20 an hour round here, £25 for theory, £62 for test.

Even if you need 20 lessons, that's just under £500.

But as you say, biking is way more fun :D

It cost me well under £100 to get my car licence but then again it was £5 a lesson many many years ago :D

I attained my CBT 18 months ago. Been great fun on the 125 but definitely time to add some more CCs between my legs. Just booked theory test today. Will then book full bike test.

Will say this, upon attaining my CBT, I had immediate dreams of grandeur - passing my full test and then buying an MV or something else stupid. I'm glad I've done the 18 months pottering around on my YBR125. Had a few minor brushes too! Manageable at sub 50 mph. Probably not so at 60+.

Stock YBR 125 will barely get over 60 anyways :D Even though I have a bigger bike now, I still love the 125, fantastic little toy and costs nothing to keep. Also has a charm that bigger bikes don't have.

I'm considering keeping mine once I get my full licence just for nipping about town, they're perfect for town riding it's just becoming a bit of a drag on a commute that consists mostly of A road.
