Motorcycle Helmet + Paint

Hi guys, looking for a piece of advice more than anything.

Let me paint the broad picture for you. A couple of months ago, some poor person left their motorcycle helmet on our doorstep (and a set of gloves). After nobody claimed them, we kept it for ourselves obviously. On a seperate note, I am embarking on a university run gumball this weekend, and we had the cunning idea of going as team Top Gear. You can see where this is going can't you. There are three of us, but rather than being the presenters we are going as the alternative characters. I will be driving and thus the Stig, with Top Gear Dog and a star (literally, like the ones in the night sky) in a reasonably priced car.

Now my dilemma is this... I'm skint... thus unable to afford to buy a white helmet for the weekend. Having this one lying around though has left me pondering what I can do to make the helmet temporarily white for the weekend. Painting the helmet is obviously a big no no due to degrading the bla bla bla. If I cover the thing in something like masking tape, could I "paint" the masking tape and peel it off after the weekend? I will be selling the helmet afterwards you see as we have no use for it and I want to obviously prevent any damage occuring to it.

The helmet is an Arai Astro-R for those interested. Advice please!!!

If ya gonna be the Stig....you need a Simpson:

but obviously in plain white :p

Just paint it white and throw it away afterwards (or try and destroy it with hand tools! vid. req if you do this. ;) ). Personally I wouldn't buy a used crash helmet - you never know what sort of abuse it's been through.

Also give it a wash inside - you'd be surpised how dirty it could be. It'll need a few days in the airing cupboard to dry out though.

with a spare couple of hundred quid, yeah... no problem :) I'll make do without for now methinks. This helmet will do.

So if I do just paint it, how would I do it? What sort of paint should I use? If I do destroy it, a video will of course be included!

Paint it with anything that will stick to the helmet!

BTW I tried destroying a helmet with hand tools years ago - I failed. They're made tough for a reason. Wear eye protection when/if you try. :D

Um...probably nearer a grand tbh :p

BTW do you know that the Arai Astro-R's are worth between £300-400?

I wouldn't spray it, i'd just velcro a white wooly hat over it & cut out the visor opening.....then sell it for £150-200 :D

True buying a used lid isn't recommended, but i'm sure that you won't have problems selling a fairly high-end Arai lid.....not everyone can afford them new!

Aye, if that helmet is worth as much as has been said, flog it and buy a cheap thing...or just get a white balaklava...like the F1 drivers wear...but not a firesuit one..that'd cost a fair bit. :p

that was the original plan, but I have left it a bit late really. I might try the white balaclava over the top approach. I could just buy some white material and stick it over. I'll try some things out and see what works best.

If you going to use it as intended i.e a crash helmet then dont paint it at all - however if its just a prop so to speak i would be inclined to roughen the surface of the helmet so the paint has something to adhere to then i would guess normal "car spray paint" would do the trick

paint it with PVA glue then paint that and with any luck up will be able to peel off the pva when ** finished with it!

Why not just buy white gaffa tape and stick it all over? It'll soon come off afterward with a bit of effort.
