How much would you say its costs in total at the age of 27 to get a full motorcycle license buy a second hand firstbike 250cc+ insured, taxed etc 5K ?

Test: about £600 if you shop around.
Bike: £1500-2000 depending on what you want.
Tax: £60-70
Insurance: £700ish
Gear: At least £600

Theres a bit left over from that estimate but they are only vague prices.

More expensive than i thought, what i don't get is why the insurance is also high for motorcycles surely you have less risk of serious injuring someone with a motorcycle than with a heavy metal box on wheels ?

How many lessons do you think it would take to go from someone with no riding experience to someone in a position to sit their practical test ?

Well your insurance might be less, ive only guessed an insurance price based on mine. (19yo with 3 years no claims).

If you have no experience what-so-ever then it might cost you about £700 to get you to pass. It really depends on how well you take to it.

One thing i can advise you, don't try and save cash on your gear. Buy a cheaper bike if you have to, aftall the gear is something that can save your life one day.

My first bike, at the age of 22, 1997 CBR600F bought for £1600, insurance TPFT was £450, 1 year no claims and passed the same day.

second bike, 06 CBR600RR at 23, £700 TPFT(didn't shop around as was most of the way through a year)

Insurance on a bike is far cheaper than most cars, you can do 0-60 in 3.2seconds and on to 160+mph, equivilent car would be extortionate.

Tax on a 600 is £53 a year, you'll get through tyres every 5k miles roughly and servicing should be stuck to religiously.

CBT cost me around £100
Bike hire/lessons cost me £300
Test fees cost me: £90.50 + £75 for 2nd attempt at Mod 2
Insurance on my 125 cost me about £500 first year, similar 2nd year, and looking like this year it's going to be more, lol.
125 cost me £3k.
Gear has cost me about £650 so far.

Insurance might be the killer, all depends on your postcode and other circumstances.

You can spend a lot less on gear if you get 2nd hand from ebay (not the lid, but everything else)

I got a full set of barely used Arlen Ness leathers for £150 :) Textile stuff is really cheap

You also don't need to spend massive amounts on brand new kit, in the latest visordown mailing list they linked to an article (linky) showing 5 helmets that scored 5* on the sharp rating system for under £150, cheapest being ~£70 iirc.

Now obviously fit is massively important, and I wouldn't expect the nice things from these helmets (like being particularly quiet) but if they fit you can get safety for cheaps which can't be too bad (I'm considering buying one of those listed as a second helmet for racing, already got one that I had to buy at circuit but looking on Sharp a while ago it was listed as 2*'s which I'd rather not race with, or even ride with for that matter :p)

I'm not advocating skimping on safety here, just that you don't need to spend silly money on a big name helmet to get the safety nowadays.

Also on insurance, does depend what bike you go for, and it will help that you're 'old' :p, I insured my first bike (TZR 125 - £365) Third Part Only for ~£140 iirc, I then insured an £800 FZR400 also TPO and with an open claim on my insurance (which eventually went 100% the silly bints fault) for ~£400.

On that note, if you want cheapness a 400 might be an option, can get an ok condition NC30 Honda VFR400 for ~£800-1200 now, which will be mostly reliable, tax is cheap (was £33 last time I had one on the road, probably more now but less than a 600 easily), insurance is cheaper and you still get a bike that can handle as well as modern 600's, does 0-60 in ~4s and will get to 125-135 if you're so inclined :)

Unfortunately finding a 400 that hasn't been ragged/tracked isn't easy nowadays

Wtf

600 for gear? You can get a certified helmet from £40 upwards, a full suit from as low as £100 or even second hand, throw some boots and gloves in and your good.

I haven't used my car in a month I let the mot run out and have decide that when I get back from holliday going to sell it and get a bike. My budget is.
Bike £500 things like xj600 late 80s early 90s as long as it has tax and mot.
Helmet £40
Saw a nice 2nd hand jacket go for £15, but have to see what's around
I expect to get full kit for £200 to begin with and then buy better stuff as and when.
Insurance £93 a year (but then have full license and held it for 11 years but no ncb) but 700 sounds way way to much.
Tax £74

Does it really matter, you're not exactly looking at the premium end of the market here and especially things like the nc30 aren't going to be too bothered by being on track...

i got a good set of leathers under £100 and boots £20 sidi boots- second hand
my 125 cost me round 500 from 2 doner bikes and 100 for new tyres.

Training, (CBT, DAS, confidence sessions before the DAS, Theory, Mod 1 & 2 test) - Just over £900.
Bike anything from £1-3k
Insurance - £300 + at a rough guess depends.
Gear £500+ if you're buying new.
Tax - £75 worst case, tax for bikes is cheap.

As i said in a later post. My insurance is based on my experience (being 19 years old with 3 years no claims on a '59 registered 600cc Gsx-R

I can only guess based on what I have been quoted/paid for.

Also Ive never paid less than £600 for a set of gear. but then again I like to buy good and buy once.

£100 for the lid, £100 for boots, £300 for jacket and trousers and £100 for gloves, i did spend a lot on gloves but i dont find many comfortable.

I now however have, a £1000 Master V gortex suit for winter. and a 2 pce set of arlenness leathers and alpinestars race boots with deinese back protector and X-lite x602 lid.

I guess expensive stuff just fits me better.

But I was only budgeting so much on gear because the OP put 5k at the end of his post, I thought that was a budget so i worked on it.

It just happened that I wanted the OP to put in a good amount of cash to gear.

my bad.

I don't think anyone meant to have a particular go at you, just trying to point out that you can get good, safe gear for less than £600 if you want, you can also spend far more if you want.

With insurance, insuring a new 600cc sports bike is comparatively expensive (compared to non-sports 600cc or lower), even my Street Triple R, or a 3-5 year old 600cc sports bike would be significantly cheaper to insure, let alone if you go for bargain basement type stuff...

an old fazer 600 would be dirt cheap to insure.

or even an 02-03 SV650.

very new rider friendly bikes.

With a budget like 5k though there is no reason why £600 shouldn't be spent on gear.
In my opinion anyways :)
