Having seen loads of these, there is one that, although I've never paid much attention to, I feel it's only fair to comment on my own recent experiences.

The myth in question is the fuel guage symbol denotes the side of the filler cap on the car either by the side of the hose on the image, or a small arrow.

Now, I'm not 100% sold on the hose part, but the arrow does seem to hold true.

I've noticed that certainly not every car has an arrow, but those that do correctly depict which side the filler cap is on.

Since arriving in Florida, I've had 3 rental cars already, A Suzuki and two Fords, all of which have had an arrow pointing to the right or left. This has always respectively been the correct side of the filler cap.

What are your thoughts? If you're unsure, just check the next time you get in a (or your) car.

Lol, Ive never heard of this but Im so intrigued now, gona have to pop to the car in a bit and see, I know my old car actually had a separate symbol/text that said 'fuel door' in the dash and a tiny arrow. But not sure bout my current car, its a MK1 focus.

What else would the arrow be for??

Every car I've had/looked at appears to have had the filler on the side the pump nozzle depicts.

It's possible not every car does this, but I reckon most do.

nah, as far as I can see the pump symbol is standard, hose always on the right. Cookie to the first person who posts a pic of one on the left.

My ZS was left hand fill, I'll try and find a pic to see if the picture denotes this. :p

Edit: Hose is on the right, surely denoting the car filler is on the left.

Edit2: On the 75 which fills from the right, the hose is also on the right. The symbol is indeed standard. :)

You went to Florida and ended up in a Suzuki? How could you let this happen :(

Always book Full Size, Luxury or Convertible.

When I went to America, the deal I got meant that I was stuck with the basic mustang, to get anything nicer would have cost almost 4 figures for the 5ish weeks I had the car.

Some people do not have the luxury of insisting on "Full Size, Luxury or Convertible", if they had said to me its a Suzuki I would have still gone with it instead of paying the extra because I would have much rather spent the money on other things.

This issue came up a while ago so it got me intrigued. Whilst when there is an arrow it always points to the filler cap side (why else would there be an arrow?), if there is no arrow the position of the hose on the pump symbol does not always indicate the filler cap side. This was proven conclusively to be false by a Hyundai i20 I hired in Malta. The end :)

we always book full size. We had a Ford Taurus that then got a puncture. A Suzuki Kizashi was bought to us as an interim car until another Ford Taurus was available. I actually preferred the suzuki over the Taurus, lol :p

This is quite frankly rubbish and is pure coincidence.

I had a Peugeot 5008 hire car and the petrol indicator was on the right corner of the fuel guage itself. The fuel cap was on the left side of the car.

This. There has been a thread on here before and a few on PH that has definitely proven that the pump nozzle location on the fuel gauge is a coincidence.

Just checked, the ZS has the pump nozzle on the opposite to the filler, my Fiat Coupe has it on the same side and my Focus TDCi hire car has an arrow.

The Kizashi is a pretty good car in terms of full size rentals!
