Looking at a Defy Plus or maybe a Xperia Mini.Heve never had a andriod phone before,so don't want to spend mega money on something i won't have for along time.My wife is getting my old 3GS and i plan to buy a 4GS next year,so this will only be a intrim phone.Plus i'm keen to have a play with andriod.
Can get the Defy Plus for about £230 and a Mini for £170.Is there anything else i should be looking at?
Will these phone run "Ice Cream Sandwich" when it comes out?

If u dont mind buying off the bay u could get a brand new atrix in budget. If it has to be from a shop i think u can pick up a lg optimus x2 for 250. Another optionn is going down the second hand route and getting something like a galaxy s or nexus s. Just a ideas for u. Also i would skip the mini but the defy plus looks very good.

Any cheap temporary phone? What about the xperia play for under £200? (most places)

The Atrix is a good idea too, if you need a tough/water resistant phone (as backup to the 4S) just get the first defy and save a few quid.

^ There's nothing wrong with it, the screen is just a little too small for a smartphone. (but it has similar internals to phones like the Desire S) Won't hurt to try one in a shop?

The Atrix is available from known importers on Ebay (digigood etc), seems to have gone up a bit though (~£270)

See if you can find the Sony Ericsson Ray for ~£250. That's probably the best small phone at that price point (i.e. same 8mp camera as the iPhone 4S, nice screen, fast processor etc) I'd take it (and Neo?) over the Defy if IP67 isn't important.

The only reason i dont think the mini is a good idea is just because of the screen size as you are coming from a 3gs. Ive seen some brand new atrix's go for around 230. Just keep an eye out on the bay. I think they are a bargain for the specs. Also as already said check out the xperia play as im sure they have been as low as 170 new.
