yer same here.

How do you get shots like that messiah khan?

Find a motorway overpass thats nice and quiet, set up your tripod, work out the exposure.(In this case it was f22 for 90 seconds), compose the shot and fire away. Remember to take your mp3 player with you though, as after an hour or 2 it can get boring waiting for the shots to expose(especially the 10minute one I did). :)

They are moving too fast through the frame to be recorded on the camera's sensor.

With a shutter speed in the seconds (as explained above) rather than fractions of seconds, and only using the available light, it's only the trails from the cars lights, the sky and anything else that is emitting light (streetlights, houses, etc) that will be recorded during the exposure.

They do. Just very very faintly, so faintly infact that you can't see them. Because its dark, and I had stopped down to f22 the amount of light being let into the camera each second is tiny. Therefore anything that doesn't give out light is unlikely to appear. Only stuff that stays in the same place for a ages, or light sources appear. :)

How do you work out the exposure?

1 and 2 are great, the sunlight on the horizon and the colour of the sky makes it, I also like the first two because of the viewpoint, most motorway light trails are taken from straight slap bang in the middle of the road.

Number 3 looses marks with me because it is that same location that every motorway shot is taken from, but you have still pulled it off much better than most.

Love em :)

Either use a proper exposure meter and take a reading, or set the camera to Aperture priority and set the aperture to the widest possible, and the highest iso possible and see what the metering is telling you. Then from that work out what shutter speed you will need on ISO 100, f22. Or the third option is to.. guess. Take an educated guess. If its too dark, you need more time, if its too light you need less.

Thanks. Good points you have there. Wondering if I should change the competition entry one.

I really should get around to redoing the ones I did awhile back.

Good effort :)

Which ones you do? Im not sure if ive sen them. I wouldn't mind doing more sometime, but its getting to the locations at dawn/dusk as I don't drive. Could be good fun on an busy spaghetti junction. :)

Does it take a lot off work/time to get the picture from the camera to a finished piece?

Not really. These took a little longer than usual because as you probably see, two of them are panoramas that required stitching together. Other than that, its just a bit of level tweaking, colour correction and adding borders.

Heres my best one

Turbo_by_je_design.jpg

Took that when I first got the 350D on the kit lens, unprocessed, taken as JPEG.

Will be redoing it when new lens' arrive :) - Plus now I've got half an idea of PP and RAW's :p

Love the pics MK. I get my tripod next week so will be looking to have a crack at something like this. I suppose with this though it is easy to produce a very boring image as it has been done so much, you generally need a subject as well and I guess that is hard to find in these places. I think the horizon and sky as someone has said really make these. I love them :) (as I do all your work)
