Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword

Why can I not hire peasants/recruits from villages? Am I missing something? My Warband strategy was essentially hiring from villages to cut costs.

What level is your leadership skill? When you begin the game (assuming its the same as Warband) your party size is limited. In other words you can't start the game and minutes later employ an army of 100 recruits.

I bought Warband and fire & sword in the steam sale at the weekend, should I play Warband first or does it not matter really?

That depends on you to a certain extent. Do you prefer swords, pikes and archery or would you like to add early musketry to that list? I'm hearing that the campaigns run along the same kinda lines.

No you just don't get option to hire men from villages at the start of the game even when you're on your own. Leadership doesn't matter at that point.

If it is as I said in my post on page 2 i like it more than old system where you are able to ride to a village and hire lots of men.

I've just started playing Warband and am very much in the "Jesus, this is hard" camp, what with my troops seemingly just running to their deaths and me with crap equipment getting killed often. So what are the general tips for surviving battles, is it just superior numbers initially?

At the moment I am upgrading the hired peasants as and when they are eligable but I find it hard to find weak enough enemies around the map to pick on, sooner or later I'll bite too much off and everyone is simply wasted.

And another thing, is there a pause key for the battles, such that you can pause to issue commands?

I suck at this game so so so much...

I always die. I can't seem to hit something with the gun unless it's a couple of ft away from me and the enemies keep ghosting through eachother so you can't really bottleneck them in anywhere. My mercenaries only seem to get 1-2 kills, the rest are usually done by me.

Any one up for setting up an OcUK game to help teach some noobs like me lol? I get my arse kicked online, think I've had one lucky kill with a musket :D

Im doing pretty well, im sided with the greens (forget the name) and we have conquered are first major castle. Im just happly taking out the enemy caravans and stealing there goods:D

Argh it seems that only the enemies rifles are the ones that can hit...my mercenaries are always so gash and the guns seem so random, literally right next to the person and it misses?

I think I'll install warband, no gunpowder sounds like a better option! If only you could somehow get your troops to stand in a line and create a wall of shots rather than the random thing they seem to do.

Shame I have not tried the demo before buying it. Got both original and warband, this feels... bad. Ended up spending 15 bullets in the tutorial to shoot the gate lock off! And coming from Floris mod in Warband (and expanded mod from original), I am finding the native... so... lame, and I paid money for that... Dissapointed... multiplayer is ok, but I suck at it haha.

So far really enjoying it, have about 5 merc musketeers who i leave on a hill shooting while i ride around the enemy hoping to keep them focused on me while they pick at them.

Loving waiting till the enemy is realoding then riding past with my pistol to shoot them :p

You new guys need to head over to the taleworlds forums listed above. At the very least you will find some player help and instructions.

You can control your troops in SP by using the function keys, F1 for infantry, F2 for marksmen, F3 for cavalry.

Simply hold down the function keys and a small flag will appear indicating where your selected troops will hold etc.

After playing my first hour or so on F&S campaign I'm not that impressed thus far.

I think I will try warband first and try and master swords, pikes and archery before I try guns ;)

Guns are fun, but to an extent. I haven't found a good implementation (mod) for guns in warband yet, but in original there was a really amazingly fun mod. I prefer mele anyway, kill way more then if you had a gun. Though a bow is very high on kill ratio it also needs silly investment in points and skills to make it worth while.

So is it not worth investing points in archery at the start, should I just concentrate on sword and pike first?

This game can be played in any way you like :). Nothing says that you have to stick to a certain playing style at all. Horse archer is very easy to play at the start, but simply harder to transition to a commander character later on due to stat investment required for archery to be really good (one shot one kill sort of thing). For practice, just save before fights and try out builds that sound fun as thats the whole point of the game.
