Mount & Blade

Mount and Blade just £5 from Impulse in their Weekend Special deal. For the amount of gameplay you can get and the number of total conversion mods and support from the mod community in general it's an absolute steal. Every computer should have Mount and Blade installed!

A friend of mine bought this game, said he enjoyed the combat system and was plesently surprised by the game.

The biggest hurdle is the slow start, the training is pretty dull (or at least it is to someone who's done it a dozen times). Once you get a decent sized army the battles are a lot of fun.

Advice for a newbie - go noble first and choose anything that looks like jousting/horse-riding/etc in your history. Being able to run around and hit people with a lance early on in the game makes leveling up quicker and the game far more fun (as horseback combat is easily the best part of the game) :)

This has to be one of my all time favourite games. I recommend 'Lords and Realms' and 'Sword of Damocles'. Personally I'd work up to Damocles from Lords.

Lords doesn't change the stock game too much but adds tons of new features.

Any idea of what levelling stats are important for the Noble class as you describe?

I tend to put lots into dex and riding, but I'm a bit too addicted to using my lance so... More important skills are probably leadership and tactics...though tactics and other 'party skills' can be dealt with by recruiting characters to your party.
