Mountain bike SPD pedals

I've never run spds on my MTB. Today was a prime example, slipping all over the place in the snow, so I need to take my feet off straight away.
Same for when I ride trails too.

If you're just doing normal XC stuff, with nothing too adventurous then I'd run spds.

Obviously you've not cycled around Central London ;)

Agreed, you dont always get a lot of warning, but i was meaning in situations like Shadowness described, where you need to get a foot down instantly.

Once you get used to them, it becomes instinctive and you can get out of mtb cleats very quickly - usually quick enough to dab a foot down when needed.

Yeah, you'd never get SPD-SL (or any other road cleat) out in a hurry.
I use crank brothers pedals on my MTB rather than SPDs, so maybe they work differently, but i can unclip by sliding my foot to the side (dont really need to twist my heels out at all) so i find i can get my foot down very quickly.
