Mountain Biking

I Had a good run at leeds urban bike park yesterday with my emtb hardtail, thinking of selling my hybrid and getting another mtb but non electric cross country or full suspension enduro

Bike advice.

Hey guys. I love my MTB. But I don't know much about bikes and what I should get next etc.

By that I mean I bought a cheap ebike in covid and ended up taking it all over doing cross country trails (30km ish) and also graded single track (mostly red grade).
For those who know cwmcarn I've done both cafall and twrch and that's a good gauge of my ability. But I also take it on random footpaths including up snowdon.

My bike cheap. It's a hard tail, it's got poor gearing for this stuff. And to be honest? I don't think it's designed for what I do with it.

Its a cube acid one 400.
It doesn't have a dropper seat. And it's forks are only 100mm travel.

This is an entry level bike i gather.

Well, I'm 40 and still love my MTB so I think I'm wanting to try a full suspension. Sometimes there are so many features in quick succession I find my hard tail. Is difficult to control due to the bouncing.

Also sometimes the terrain is so rough the bumping is so bad I can barely see straight!

I've never ridden a full suspension ever. How much of an impact is this going to have?

Also. I'm happy to spend 5kish if anyone has any suggestions.

My cube is here

And a pic of my bike up snowdon from just before Xmas.

S XC and some red routes?

It's an E bike - is gearing that important? What gearing does it have?

These would be worthy upgrades. I've never ridden an eMTB but I suspect it's heavy and heavier things are often unwieldy, less nimble. It sounds like that bike is specced for general riding and not too much of it over more challenging terrain.
A dropper is very useful combined with some skills!

If you want to continue doing the sort of riding your are doing and don't want to race or do more challenging trails with steeper section, boulders etc then I don't see why you would go full suspension. Hardtail geometry and component selection give quite a range of characteristics depending on what you prefer. Also different frame materials can have quite different feel. However, thats partly because I like to fix my own bikes and don't need or want the extra weight and complexity of the second spring/shock.

Gulp!
I honestly think you might get better advice on Reddit.
Personally I'd buy a 2nd hand Voodoo Bizango Pro for £600 to see if a dropper, 130mm fork and lighter bike gives you what you want. Assuming it doesn't need to be eMTB!

It does have to be electric. My knees can't cope with the climbs around here.

I'm not even sure what the riding I do is called? Basically I like exploring trails you can walk on with my bike. Narrow single track stuff. I'm less keen on short down hill stuff with jumps etc. But I'm happy to do drops (often natural).

There's even a number of times I can't even get up some with my ebike in turbo mode. But these are extremely steep. Like 30 percent or more gradient.

By gearing I mean I can visually see on many other bikes the ratio between the wheel cog and the the pedal cog is larger than on my bike.

Ie my lowest gear is much higher(harder) than other bikes.

I also don't believe my forks are very upgradable as they have a narrow column that isn't compatible with many other forks.

But I think you're right, probably better to ask reddit.

Whilst i'm not a massive expert, i'd imagine you could get a hefty upgrade without going as far as £5k. Something like this looks very decent. Unsure if full suspension is needed, but maybe for comfort it's usefull

Hard to know.
I find I'm limited on really bumpy stuff. Because the shock going through my arms/feet is significant. Sometimes my feet bounce off the pedals.

My bike is very cheap though. And the forks are cheap.

The full suspension I was looking at is about same weight as my hard tail.
But 3000 more cost.

Also. I'm 40 now and my ever dodgy knees may benefit from a full suspension?

All I see when I'm out is full suspension ebikes. Very feet rarely do I see a hard tail.

You could perhaps look for a full suspension bike that lets you lock the back suspension so you have an option of turning of the back suspension if you don't want to use it or for climbing hills, or perhaps find a place that will let you hire one for a day to test it out, such as Dalby forest or somewhere similar

Thinking i might try a coil shock on my A130, Rockshox Vivid Ultimate Coil RC2T looks a decent option. Never had a coil before, and now this bike doesn't need to do any of the XC type riding any more though it might be time, also might see if it can take a 52.5 or even a 55mm stroke rather than the 50mm, for 136, 143 travel.

i've just ordered a RS Vivid Ultimate coil for my Trek Rail : 230x60
Was debating whether to go for the air or coil, but the coil just got it. The hydraulic bottom out feels good on the same shock on my sons Quake DH bike

Nice :)

I rode up there a few times many years ago, must have been in 2014 and 2015.
Was planning to go up last April on our EMTB's, but the weather was rubbish. Something on our to do list this year.

Go fir something trail bikish, with a bosch motor or if you can get it un your budget the am flow. All probably more bike than you need but that's the beauty of emtbs they feel less overbiked.

Something like the orbea rise, or similar geometry.

I basically bought what was on offer and could get with c2w, ended up with an orbea wild. Too much bike for me now, but still mega fun and means I can take to golfie and do 50km round trips to my local trails.

Dont listen to the £500 vodoo with upgrades, that's crazy. Your in Wales there's plenty of places to up your skill level.

There's a lot of places and a lot of risk of death here. The reaper in coed Y brenin was particularly stupid/exciting.

One I was looking at seems to have good reviews. But there are 2 reasons I hesitate.
Its 400w + 250 extender. But the extender has been placed in a way to keep the centre of mavity low. But is 650 enough? My current bike is 500 (I thought it was 400) but this bike would have a stronger motor. And I'm guessing being full sus would also suck up some juice.

Whyte evo rs mx 2026

Its down to 5500 from 6500.
Gutted. My cycle to work scheme caps out at a useless 1500!

I personally wouldnt want an extender, but only because I would have it attached all the time. Yhe advantages are nice though, having a lighter bike when you need it and more range when you do too.

Ill get a good 1500m of climbing out of mine, 750Wh battery.

Tonnes of riding, done a few racing nearby there. Dyfi and defi woods just down the road, foel gasnach etc.

Yeah luckily mine is £6k now.

TBF I didn't realise he was only after a motorbike.

Tfw you've never tried one, or you dont do the type of riding where it shines :)

I admit it. I'm prejudiced against them. Being fit enough to ride uphill unassisted is something i aspire to and cherish. Anything else is cheating but if having a motor gives people the confidence to get outside on a bike then I'm all for it. However, the notion of spending £6k on a bike makes me shudder!!! (Retired Scottish person mentality)
