Mountain Biking

For those of you who have hardtails, how do you prevent your ankles from taking impact on landings and hurting when doing jumps or rocky descents? do I need to be bending my knees when landing or get some proper MTB shoes?

I came off my bike on Wednesday as well, was going over a small drop and the pedal hit the side or bottom or something and the bike went flying, my left hand took most of the impact and it's still hurting when I put force on it
Lessons and practice. Picking the right line etc. That’s going to help take some of the hits out and save the feet from the onslaught that a hardtail provides. It may be boring but reruns of the same trail over and over and over until its second nature is key. Once you master it, new trails fall in to place much more quickly as certain types of jump and terrain become far more quickly recognised and dealt with as if second nature.
