Hey,

I'm building a NAS which will be using Windows XP for the operating system. Is it possible to mount the NAS on my MacbookPro?

I've heard of a few protocols such as AFP and SMB but not 100% sure how they work.

Anyone in the same situation and managed to get around this problem?

The NAS can be any filesystem as the file is sent over the network.

Easiest way to do this would be to connect a NAS via ethernet directly to your router, and use the IP address to login / "connect to server", much the same way as you would when configuring the router.

If it's NTFS, you won't be able to pull the drive to connect directly to the MBP (via USB, FireWire etc) as the filesystem wouldn't be recognised.

FAT32 is a good option (providing you don't have files >4GB) as it can be read by both platforms.

This may affect if I build a NAS myself or just buy the QNap TS-209. I don't think I have any files over 4GB but there's always those hidden ones.

I'm finding it difficult making sure I get quick transfer speeds for TimeMachine and being able to use it as a media server to stream stuff to my ps3.

I bought a LaCie NAS once.. worked well with a PS3, and had a decent web config page that enabled simple setup on OS X.

Worth a look if you're up for buying an off the shelf solution.
