At present, mine is sitting in a 5.25" bay due to power cabling issues.
Going to take 2 of my hard drives out as I've got the SSD and a Samsung F3 now which more than cover my needs.

THere's the black plate that came with the SSD but I'm sure I saw or read something about it being pretty useless so any advice, either way, on how to properly mount the drive in either a 3.5" or 5.25" bay (3.5" preferred).

Not sure what you mean about the backplate being useless, just use the backplate as it was intended they are all pretty much the same as far as I'm aware.

Mine is velcro'ed in place on the blind side of the 5 1/4" bays in a 700D. I havn't got round to powering the system up yet, rebuilding, do they get hot at all, I don't have any fans on it at the mo.

Well, the backplate attaches to the drive but I can't connect the plate to my 3.5" drive bays. The holes are, bar one set, in the wrong place as the plate is about an inch too short.
