Mounting Image to another PC...?

Just so we get the lingo clear, you're not mounting an image, you're cloning from one driver to another by imaging.

What i've done is i've built another HTPC which is identical in spec and config as the existing one im using now.

Instead of formatting/installing windows/drivers/reconfiguring etc etc i want to create an image of my existing setup (on the existing HTPC) and mount it onto the new HTPC that i have created. Thus saving loads of time.

So yes, i want to clone my existing HTPC setup and put it on the 2nd one i've built.

I knew exactly what you were trying to do, but your use of words was annoying me ;)

best way to do it..

install acronis true image, and get it to create a bootable acronis disc (now uninstall acronis)

use ccleaner slim to remove temp files
disable system restore.

now there's 2 ways to do it..

if you have an external hard drive, do this,

-connect external drive to working htpc, insert bootcd, reboot pc.
use 'backup' to create an image on the external drive.

-connect ext drive to 2nd htpc, insert bootcd, reboot pc.
use 'restore' to restore image to this pc.

^you have an image for future use this way..

-----------

-connect hd from htpc2 to htpc1, put in acronis disc, reboot
choose 'clone drive' -make sure you do the right one, etc

-remove hd and put it in htpc2

Would i need to wipe the ext. hdd before i create an image on it??
That might be a problem as im using it as a backup drive....

Will try using the 2nd option

if you're just create the image, it'll store it as a file, so '1st option' is perfect for that, ie it will save the image as

E:\AcronisImages\htpc basic install.tib

no need to format or anything -if it's likely to be a large image, then you'll want to save it on an NTFS partition, as Fat32 only supports up to 4gb file sizes (saying that, acronis can probably do file splits, i can't remember now)

once you use it, you'll laugh at how easy it is :)
