Moved into a my first flat, how to get connected ASAP?

Hi,

Guess I could find out the answer reading a few threads but I have a lot on my plate as I'm moving houses, looking for easy answer :D

Moved into new flat with no phone line, I want to get ADSL ASAP. Should I get BT phone line first and then shop for a broadband deal or could I go straight to ISPs and they handle the phone line? This is really confusing me tbh
 
It's probably going to take at least a week, you'll pretty much need to get a phoneline from BT, and go with one of their packages, or just get the phoneline and get someone else to provide the internet via the BT phoneline...

Last time I had this problem, I basically bought a 3G dongle and used that whilst I waited for the line to complete..
 
Spoke too fast, but thanks anyway. Checked TalkTalk ADSL, they would install new line for me for £25. SimplyBroadband (up to 16Mb) for £2.5 + £15.40 line rental seems like the best deal there for a 12 month contract. Would that suffice for online gaming (FPS etc?), I'm honestly a n00b in this would appreciate an answer although I suspect it could be "it depends" which is fair enough.
 
I think Plusnet might be cheaper especially if you pay the line rental for the year up front. If the place has had a phone line in the recent past and you know what the number was then you may be able to sign up via a cashback website to save a few quid.
 
TalkTalk also provide the option of paying 1 year upfront but that's not really an option for me. Only difference from Plusnet is that they charge you £25 less for installation. No way for me to know the previous number I'm afraid, though I remember reading somewhere that gaming traffic has priority in Plusnet which is good, not sure about TalkTalk.
 
With TalkTalk myself. Been a year now and so far all been hunky dory. I know they have a bad name but know a few people now with no issues. Price is good and speed has been ace!

Plusnet/BT/O2/Sky are better


Handy thing with BT is being able to connect to other people's 'BT Wifi' with your login details.
 
No issues with TalkTalk here and been with them nearly 2 years now. Lots of people have had issues with them though but been fine here. Cust support is not the best though.

Sky were worse for me.

I just moved into a new place and the landlord allowed me to request the phone line and broadband install before the move in date so was only without for a few days. The earliest the engineer could come out was about a week after I paid for the line and even then I was quite lucky as I checked for other dates and they were all another week after that, so two weeks.

I just got BT Infinity (75Mbps download and 18Mbps up at the moment :D), paid for the phone line for a year up front and took their top unlimited BB package.

So yeah, get a phoneline in first. If you do want to shop around then it's going to take longer as you'll need to wait until the phone line is active before you can order broadband from another company whereas BT would do both on the same day.

This. Someone next door turned their BT router on every evening which had BT WiFi active so I could at least get on then while I was waiting for mine.

I would be wary of getting a phone line first then looking for a provider. Most LLU providers will ask you to move the line rental and calls to them as well. If you activate with BT then change, say hello to termination charges.
 
Went with Plusnet, installation on.......... 4TH MARCH!!!!! Says because of recent bad weather BT is busy as hell. Checked TalkTalk and it was the same...... oh well...

Presume it's area dependant? I just signed up to BT Fibre, checked dates on Plusnet and BT and both were all exact 2 weeks ahead of the day (minimum time frame to transfer ISP). So I assume my area isn't that busy, we haven't had much bad weather really.

Also weather dependant as well. It's not been that well recently so they're probably got a lot of repair orders.

To OP, no matter who you go to, in the end they still use Openreach to install the line. So 4th March is the earliest for you... providing they arrive....
 
Have you considered a basic Virgin Media package, Phone, 30MB broadband and TV, they have some 6 months half price offers on at the moment.

I'd assume so. And perhaps service dependant as I'm ordering ADSL. Also I'm needing new line installation so it could be all because of that.

From what I gathered Virgin is rubbish. Guess I could survive with mobile tethering and Internet dongles for a weeks.. that or I meet a kind neighbour :D
