Hi
basically, i moved my router from downstairs to upstairs. Plugged it all in upstairs and switch on my computer. Now it says it's connected but when i open up Firefox i can't get on any website.

Moved the router back downstairs, connected it up and works fine straight away

Any ideas why? And what i can do to fix it

Thanks in advance

If it's DSL I'm sure it only works on the master BT socket. Which I'm guessing is the downstairs one.

DSL should run off of any socket

where does it say connected? can you see the speed that you connect at ?

Just reiterating this. Has the modem established a DSL connection and got online, as indicated by status lights on the router or info in its web interface. Or are you just connected to the router.

Assuming this is DSL, as with cable you'd normally only have one point in the house to connect a cable modem to.

All the microfilters (if used) are installed correctly?

Yes :)

Bottom right hand corner of the screen, the two computers sign. Says:
Local Area Connection
Speed: 100mbps
Connected

I'm not entirely sure what DSL is, it could be. Its an Orange Livebox, and our ISP is Orange.

All the normal lights were flashing, and laptops could connect wirelessley. But still had the same problem

Yeah that's your local connection to the router. Try pinging www.google.co.uk (start/run/cmd/ping www.google.co.uk) and see if anything comes up, or if, when you have it plugged in upstairs, the sync/DSL light is steady.

Broadband doesn't always work through phone extensions, how long is the extension? Is the extention the type that plugs in or is it wired in? If it's plugged in remove the microfilter and phone from your downstatirs socket, if it then works upstairs you've got a micrfilter problem.

If not try this click start > run and type in CMD. When the command line window pops up type in 'ipconfig'. It'll give you some information, what you've looking for is the default gateway. It should be something like 192.168.1.1. Type this into a web browser, this should give you the admin interface for your router which will give you some extra information.

Yes, downstairs is the Master socket. Rang up orange and they said that it needs to go through the master socket which is why it wasn't working. I don't know much about phone sockets, but is it possible to change the location of the master socket?

Yes, but extensions are rarely both in my experience.

dont know where you go this information but all three of my previous address's i have had adsl running on an extension as the mster socket is no where near my PC.

OP

have you made sure when you have connected the router upstairs you have put a filter on the socket downstairs?

Yep, it's got a filter :(

I was looking through the box that came with my router etc when i first got it. And i was wondering whether i would have to run the set-up disk again when the routers moved upstairs. Would this work?
