ok bit of a basic question,

Ive destroyed my motherboard, and need to build a new computer, but I need to get the data off a the old raid 0 setup ( 2 disks using nvidia raid controller on msi motherboard ).
Do I have to buy another nvidia based chipset to be able to see the disks, or can I go with another make ?
I really want to put the disks externally and start again with a new internal disk so any advise on this is appreciated.

Recovering a RAID0 set after a controller failure or board replacement is always going to be a bit hit and miss. The rule of thumb is that you need an identical controller, so ideally the same board, board revision and bios level. Now occasionally you can get away with a different controller from the same manufacturer but it's not guaranteed. It should also be said that even if you get an identical board there's no guarantee you'll get the data back.

This is why backups are important!

Boot your computer with a Linux live CD, run 'dmraid -ay' and it'll detect proprietry RAID metadata formats such as Nvidia's, allowing you to copy the data to another disk/array - the chipset doesn't matter at all.

That didn't work for me after my 3rd DFI Infinity 975X failed and I moved my (intel) RAID0 to the new motherboard (nVidia)... fortunatly all critical files were backed up on my NAS box, but I still lost my Oblivion download (legal from d2d).
