hi guys for several reasons i need to move my router from one room to another but dont want a performance loss if possible im on sky unlimited 20 meg adsl which uses the rj11 at both ends .

i will need about 10m-15m extension i have been told im best with a shielded cable with 4 wire twist but then someone else has said use cat5e and put your own plugs on the end

any info or which product is best would help

unfortunatley i live in an old building with 3 flats and more than likely old wiring so homeplugs i doubt would be any good before i get 50 replies suggesting homeplugs :D

Do you have to 100% move the router or could you get away with running some cat5e cable into the other room and putting a switch there instead?

Or maybe get some f-plugs and connectors and running new RG6 cable from in front of the router rather than behind if you get my drift.

RG6 would only make sense for a cable connection.

You should be able top extend using Cat5e without loosing much of your sync. I'd create a hardwired extension to a new outlet located where the router needs to be.

my apologies,I forgot Sky use the telephone line for some of their BB connections.

basically i want to hardwire my xbox and also connect my sky box and my smart tv which are not wireless i wanted to hardwire the xbox cuz the kids also have one and also i wanted to cut down on the amount of things like a switch and so on

does your router have enough empty ports for everything you need or would you want a switch anyway?

yeah i dont use any ports at the minute so i have 4 free also the way the wall plug is means the router sits in between the house phone base and the tv and speaker system which i prosume does not help .

moving it would also give it a nice interference free area

thanks for that mate but to be honest i dont need to move the box or make a new box as i live in rented accom so the less holes the better lol i have a nice little table for the router so i just need to know the best cable to use which wont drop performance heavily i have a pretty decent connection and line stats as i only live 400 yards from the exchange

update

bought a twisted sheilded 15m cat5e but with adsl ends and rigged all up was not hoping for much but was suprised

before ping 27 d/l 18.2 up 1.0

now ping 16 d/l 21.2 up 1.1

Hi, l bought one of these Belkin RJ11 cable to replace the cheap one that come's packed.

If you game wired cat5e is the way to go for PC or Consule, WIFI for phone's, etc.

Sky use a ADSL connection hence RJ11 cable from mastersocket to modem for Adsl or Fibre connection.

Belkin Hi-Speed Internet Modem Cable RJ11M-M (Transparent), 1.8m Product Description-£3
The High-Speed Internet Modem Cable from Belkin lets you transmit data 10 times faster than a normal telephone cable. It transfers information
at 100 Mbps and conveniently connects your modem or phone to your telephone wall jack. The 24 k gold-plated RJ11 contacts provide maximum
conductivity to minimize data loss, and double-shielding reduces EMI/RFI (electromagnetic/radio frequency interference) so you can enjoy
error-free data transfers at high speeds.

yeah it was a belkin one i purchased although i have encountered a slight problem .

just to get rid of a lot of devices conected to the router or use to be connected but now no longer owned i changed the wireless password but for some reason the router would not do it and it seems to have reverted to a password i used about 2 years ago the only way i could get back into the router was to use the latest password . how strange
