Right.

My girlfriend got back yesterday from her holiday in Turkey. She'd been there two weeks and had a fun time by the sounds of things. She came up to our Sixth Form (she's 18 in October if that may help) and was really miserable.

I spoke to her this evening and she said that she felt confused and that she wants to leave Britain to live abroad, Spain or Greece probably. (unfortuantely she only speaks English fluently, I don't know what basics she has in any others)

I don't like seeing her miserable and I was rather hoping that maybe you guys may be able to help me out.

So what do you guys think on the matter in general? - My thought writing this would be that going on holiday and actually living and working in a country is very different.

But has anyone on here taken a chance? Has it worked out? Or do you know anyone who has and same question has it worked for them?

I really appreciate your time and now I think i better get to bed.

Good night!

The only place I would ever consider moving to (abroad) is America :)
and I am seriously considering it when I'm a bit older, like 24 unless England shapes up.

Who knows, maybe she was seeing a guy she liked while she was over there and shes sad to leave him?

Joking :p

Shes 17, shes probably just attention seeking or just doing what they do best and moping and complaining about everything.
She will get over it in about a week like has been seen.

You would think she would be happier to get back home and See you though :\

I see this all the time on those TV programmes, it does come as a very big shock to people when they realise that it's not a holiday anymore and they must find work to be able to eat,and have no time to laze about on the beach

You guys are probably right about her growing out of it.

Well I hope so! As much as I'd hate to see her go I'd hate it more for her to be miserable.

As for her being pleased to see me, before she went things were on the up off the back of a little rough patch.

I guess she may have to wait a little longer for that perfect opportunity to arise. eg. a club rep (seasons over now)

Cheers for the views made so far.

Any success stories to share? (really sounds like I want to get rid of her 'eh! :p )

my parents did this last year they moved over to America , Florida while i finished up some schooling. I joined them this year in august and have now started Palm beach Atlantic uni. We all feel it is the best decision we've ever made and that england is slowly becoming worse and worse.

I cant say id like to live somewhere in the med mainly because its not my style of living. i much prefer urbanized western places :D

Language is essential, otherwise the move would be pointless.

Once your fluent in Spanish for e.g. then move :)

The problem with girls at such (teen)ages is that they are over-excited with things like that and couldnt think clearly of the possible challenges they have to face. I remember my sister having similar thoughts, thinking of how cool it would be living here and there but then...oh, I havent got money for plane ticket to Australia and they ask me for visa?...they dont speak English in Spain?(I still mess with her about saying that).

Truth is, your gf would start finding that idea less and less appealing when she needs to take all pros and cons into account. Besides, I think its a common feeling for people to say how glad they would be to actually live at(or in your case near) the place, where they recently had a holiday on.

Good luck on meeting the requirements if you are a British citizen.

I would probably say to her, if you want to move prove your serious about it.

Find out all the information we need, how much it will cost us ect...

Will take longer than a week, and see if she is still interested then :p

Tell her to apply to become a rep for some holiday company - friend of mine did it for two four months periods over two years. She's now lost the will to move overseas.

Actually, don't suggest that to your girlfriend - unless you go with ;) (or don't want her back).

the man speakth the truth. It took us 8 years to get our green card after applying almost every year.well worth it though. and the process of obtaining the visa isnt cheap either £150 medical per person and £800 for the GC IIRC non refundable if they refuse you.

Agreed. You are not applicable for the green card lottery if you are a UK citizen either.
It is pricey and time consuming to get here, sometimes people are guilty of grass is greener syndrome. However, some people find a new lease of life here also.
But it is a process you have to be dedicated to.

I wasn't particularly someone for whom it was the light at the end of the tunnel, I was just bought here by circumstance (OH).
Out of curiosity Killa_ken, what grounds did you get your GC on?

To be honest, I miss the english way of life. I miss the english sense of humour and the down to earth people.
Where I am right now is very superficial and snobby and this brings me down daily. I may try moving around somewhere in the country before going back to the UK (for my OH's sake), but here I feel ostracized because I am a foreigner and have found it difficult to place roots.
